Ok. I'm buying an intrepid from one of my buddies and the tranny is bad on it. It is a 3.5 Sport. I was just wondering what the difference between the tranny on a Sport is and just a regular tranny out of a 3.5 and if it would work in there or not. I know on the Sport edition they have autostick. But yeah any help on this would be wonderful. Thanks guys

Sounds like a solenoid.
The trannys have a built in defense mechanism to prevent from doing serious damage (in the event of a detected problem) drive and over drive are disabed (leaving only first and second).

I've never opened up a dodge tranny but I've had the same problems on other cars and it was relatively easy to fix. It would be worth while to have a trany shop hook the scan tool up and tell you for sure.

Some solenoids can be replaced witha fairly basic pan pull.
Some are farther into the body of the transmission.
I'd get it checked and find out which solenoid and where it it located in the transmission.

May save you some $$$ if you're a "do it yourselfer"

almost forgot!!!

It could also be a speed sensor or something that can easily be replaced from te out side.

Again I'm no Dodge transmision expert, but I do have some similar experiences.

I bought a 96 Mazda (with same condition) for $300 put a $30 VSS (fixed the problem) and sold it for $1800.
I bought a 98 Nissan (same condition) for 600 bought a 300 solenoid pack (installed it by simply removing the pan) fixed the problem and sold it fr 2k.

I would definately buy the Haynes manual, this will tell you how to check the VSS etc.

If it pulls good in 1st and 2nd, and the fluid level wasn't excessively low (or have a scortched smell) you may be able to fix this fairly easily.

Let me know what you find.

There may be a difference. It depends if the sport engine has a higher output. The 3.3 liter version transmission differs from the 3.5 liter version internally. The 3.5 has bigger and stronger parts. Your best bet may be to check the serial number for the transmission code and see what tranny it has.

On the side of the tranny there is 2 sensor. Input speed sensor and output speed sensor, when one or both of those sensor fail the tranny goes into limp mode .Bet you it's one or both of them.

There no difference's, all of the 42LE trans are the same. and the term you are looking for in Limp-in mode. That only gives you 2nd gear, to limp in to the local dealer or trans shop.
