We understand what you meant Dub... Apparently Matt doesn't... The point is, the show of hate for the Viper makes a member ask that.... Nevermind.... quote:

The Viper started with a V10, still has it, and perhaps should for a long time. It's what Dodge has that Chevy doesn't. It's not about "having to have a V10 to produce enough power". That's what the V8 Hemi does. Does Chevy or Ford have an engine around 5.7L that produces 345 HP? Note that there is headroom. I'm sure you could get 400 HP without breaking a sweat. Chrysler has always been known for slightly underrating (a 340 HP Chrysler rating might read more like 350 HP on a dyno). Now, what they could do with the Viper is give it an uber big block V8 hemi (8.0L+) and make it "blower-ready". Still, I like the Viper's V10, and it's market. Making the Viper mainstream is absolutely ridiculous. That would take so much out of the Viper name. I think Dodge should downsize the displacement on the Viper (closer to maybe 7.6L/7.7L) and turbocharge/twin turbocharge. Supercharging isn't really effective enough to be worth the hassle in my opinion. While it provides better low-end torque than turbos, it isn't as efficient, and in the Viper's case which has more than a sufficient amount of low-end torque, supercharging seems to non-Chrysler in practive. A 8.4L engine needs A LOT of air, and turbocharging that would put the Viper over 750 HP, and twin-turbocharging even over 800 HP depending on how big the turbos are. Raising the compression ratio is another option, but raise it over 10.5:1 and you have to question how long the engine will last.

A few points I would like to make. The previous engine offered in the Corvette was known as the LS1, it was a 5.7L which produced 350hp & 365ft-lbs of tq. The LS6 version of the GM 5.7L produced 405hp & 405ft-lbs of tq. The best version of the HEMI to compare and contrast with would be the 392 (6.4L) if you wanted to make a point about Chrysler not needing a V10 to produce serious hp & tq. As much as I hate to say it, when the Viper was in production they had to go with a V10 because back then they didn't have a serious offering from their V8 lines. Back then the best they had was the 360 (5.9L) V8. It wasn't powerful enough to fulfill the Viper's needs. The V10 is based off of the 360's family and from what I have read uses technology from the 340, its from the same family just different heads and stuff. The V10 actually still has a lot of untapped potiental yet left in it. The compression is still low in comparison to the Vette and from what I've observed it still doesn't have a lot of high tech components. Also, Chrysler has shown that while making mild changes, they are able to boost an extra 75hp & 90ft-lbs of tq. Nowdays, Dodge has a V8 that could properly power the Viper, but they shouldn't change it because the V10 is part of the Viper's personality. Also have you ever heard of the Hennesey modified Vipers? Those are twin-turboed and produce over 1000hp.
