Look for a fuse... from your earlier post, the popping sound with the spark sounds to me like you might have hit the ground side instead of the switched side of the terminal... That would cause a blown fuse or fusable link (which there is a ton of them on the driver's side between the firewall and the battery). If you lived closer, I would love to help out, I don't mind electrical work at all. It is easier if you take it one wire at a time...

I wish I had a schematic for the Dakota, I could look it over and try and help you more.

Later Daze,
Shorty

ya the fuse thing makes sense.

so you know where the fuse would be. under the dash or in the engine bay. tomorrow I will look and see. that would explain why there is no power there anymore.

thanks for all the help you dont know how much I hate wireing.

could be a bad solenoid, best bet would be to replace the starter

I don't have a manual or a schematic for the dakota... YET, but I am trying to find one so I can finish up my wiring and help others with... As far as the location, I would imagine it is in the engine bay. There are also the fuseable links that are between the firewall and battery on the driver's side.

Just incase the cleaning of the contacts doesn't work, here is a link for a cheap starter

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!

I dont know what I really did.lol but I took the starter off again and cleaned up all the contacts and every connection. I tried to find any sort of fuse or fusable link, but I couldnt. so I just jumped it and it sarted!

so now Im just gonna run a switch to it. a push button one would probly be better, so i'm gonna go look at some today. and hide it so I dont push it by a mistake.

so thanks for all the help and information, and hopefully I dont have anymore problems for the next lil while.

it's all done now.

I went out and bought a push button switch and hooked it up to the starter. I mounted it just to the left of the steering coloumn. (it beside my tach switch now)

thanks again for all the help!

Coool, glad you got'er fixed!

FWIW, it looks like there is a fuseable link in the circuit. (photos below).

Mr, Shorty,
Autozone has some wiring diagrams on line: http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/11/3b/c2/0900823d80113bc2.jsp

Regards,
Greg

Thank you very much!!

In the top picture Greg posted, there is a fuseable link that is in the starter selonoid circuit and I bet almost anything that is what your problem is. The only other thing in the circuit is the key switch module and I highly doubt that would be your issue.

In the second picture Greg posted it shows exactly where all of the fuseable links are located... Look in the bundle of fusable links for a RED one and test the wire on both sides. You can either replace the fuseable link with another link or use a single fuse block with the rubber cap(since it is under the hood).

I know there is a two wire plug leading down to the starter from the battery and it could have gotten unplugged or something...

Later Daze,
Shorty

ok, that diagram helps out alot. the fusable links are right under my washerfluid jug then. so all a fusable link is -----=====------ does it look like that? cause I seen a couple wires around that area that were joined together like that. they were covered in that heat shrink stuff. if I were to put a fuse there instead. what size fuse whould I use?

You would replace the complete link, it has one connection like that on each end of it and they are usually about 4" or so long... I wouldn't replace it until I comfirmed it was bad by testing for electrical power on both ends... If you have a manual it should tell you the value of that link and I would match that amperage, but if it didn't say or I couldn't find it, I would start with a 20 amp spade and if it popped then I would go up, but that should be fine.

Later Daze,
Shorty

PS- I really need to quit being so cheap and buy a FSM... it would help so much...lol

Here's a good link on repairing fusiable links (hypalon wire): http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/electrical-links.html
