Does anyone have any experience using premium (98 octane) fuel in a 2.0 L caliber.
Have ordered an SXT with CVT and was wondering if higher octane fuel would make any difference to performance and/or fuel economy??

Where do they sell 98 Octane Premium fuel? That sounds more like Race Fuel then Premium...

Octane makes no difference in performance/mileage unless you are running a super high compression engine. Race car engines normally run higher octane for that reason.

Now if you wanna run some nitro-methane...............

Just kidding. Run what your owner's manual recommends. And forget spending money on octane additive's that promise to raise your octane by "3 points".......those are actually 1/10's of an octane point.

Also remember that different parts of the country reformulate their gasolines for the different seasons of the year.

There are MUCH MORE cost effective ways to improve your vehicle's performance than playing the "octane game".

It says right on the car use 87 octane and thats what i use.

Most gas stations in my town offer 87 Octane as baseline. But some Husky/Mohawk gas stations offer "enhanced" 90 octane as the regular fuel and I think it is 92 or 93 octane as the next level up. Thyey also tend to have a different mix of fuel that is better for the enviroment so I go there more often. Their usually about the same price other stations, sometimes cheaper in price so why not get a better fuel for the same price.

Here in the UK we have 95 octane and a premium 100 octane.

I have used them both, and whilst my best ever recorded MPG was on 100 octane fuel, I cannot say that overall I noticed any difference in performance or MPG return over a long period.

Hi....My wife's brother is a pilot & really believes in good gasoline. Won't use Arco 87 octane at all. He's made me & my wife(his sister) leary of it too. But I use other 87 octane & get wonderful results. My Caliber 2 liter engine & CVT transmission give my wife & I a magic carpet smooth ride & 35MPG on the highway(32+MPG going over 4000 foot passes). I just can't see how higher octane will better your performance unless you can get 40MPG. Grace & peace to you...litesong

Here is an old thread that I will follow-up on. Gradually have used more Arco 87 gasoline & I have no running or roughness problems. At the time of my April post, my overall average was about 29.4MPG which had risen from an overall average low in the wintertime of 28.4 MPG. With the warm spring, summer & early fall weather & higher energy summer mix gasoline, myyearly average for 50+tanks of gas has risen to 31.4MPG. Arco has not contributed to this rise, but it hasn't hurt the MPG either, but acted just like any other 87 octane gasoline. As stated, Arco 87 causes no running problems. I strongly suspect that if I had used higher octane gas, even if it wouldn't have caused any running problems,higher octane gasoline would not have given higher MPG.

Waste of money using prem......
