Default MIF Light

My 2001 Durango with 58,000 lights runs fine. Yesterday, the Malfunction Indicator Light came on. The maunal is very vague as to what the problem might be. I've read about using the ignition key to find a "code", but haven't had any luck getting that to work. I'd like some more information so I don't go into the dealership clueless....we all know how fun that can be. Any suggestions what might case this light to come on?

Thanks!

Turn your key to the on position 3 times in a row with the engine off and then look on the odometer. Have a pen and paper ready and write down the code/codes it gives you then look them up on this link this is for the dakotas but it's all the same.

I got the code (P1740) and then this morning the RPM's begin to rev, but the speed did not increase. I thought it might have been the speed sensor, but after looking at it at the dealership, it looks like my torque converter was shot. There was also a crack in the transfer case. Guess that's what I get for using it in some off-road situations befor having skid plates, huh? So I'm getting a complete tranny overhaul today!

That's the code I got just the other day then my OD blew up while I was in the middle of a cross country move [:@]. My rpms were all over the place right before it went. Make sure to get your radiator replaced with the rebuild or it will happen again (They fixed mine and I got going again and the thing went out after 80 miles). As far as offroading I doubt that is what caused it unless you really beat the crap out of your tranny on rocks.

Ok, this may sound dumb, but what does the radiator have to do with it? I'm pretty mechanically challenged, so I can't make the connection. The temps were running normal at the time the RPM's started jumping around. I did rest the transfer case on some rocks last time we went out, but didn't think too much about it.

Read my post on tranny problems It's at the top right now. Basically metal fragments can get into the radiator from the torque converter and apparently the guy that I have been dealing with at AAMCO thinks that when my tranny failed originally it sent tons of crap into the radiator which had plugged it up pretty good and my long move put too much stress on the tranny and blew up the OD.
