Just bought a used '98 Durango. 4days after buying it, I have the prob where the daytime running lights work fine, and so do the hi-beams, but not the main headlights. Any idea if this is main switch on dash or a short or something wierd like that?. Anyone else had this problem at all? Any help is appreciated thanks!

I take it you've cycled the lights from low to high? usually that does the trick.

I take it you must be in canada. I don't have daytime runners on my 99. lack of sound'n crazy, but aren't your daytime runners regular headlights?

Yes I am in Canada. All Canadian vehicles since around '91 have to have daytime running lights, unless the vehicle is older or imported. Everything made and sold in the country now have to have them by law...reduces accidents by approx. 30% apparently. They will run at 50% or so less than a regular headlight, so you have the daytime runner, then your normal headlight, and also the hi beam.

It's possible the bulbs are burnt-out, check for voltage at the bulb first
If you get no power to the low beams, they have there own fuse,
If the fuse is good the multi-Function switch fails all the time (On US Vehicles)
WOW.... I just went over the wireing diagram for the DRL's ...... GOOD LUCK!!!
I hope for your sake it's the bulbs, fuses or multi-function switch
If it's a wireing problem you'll need to find someone up there for help!!

Thanks for the reply JCswm! Looks like I got some figuring to do here..lol. Hopefully it is just a fuse or something simple like that (maybe a switch) Would almost seem weird that both headlights would burn out at the same time. Who knows, maybe the Canadian Durangos got the same probs as the U.S. ones as far a switch goes.

Sounds like the switch to me. There are some other previous posts that involve the headlight and the switch. I've replaced my switch after the cycling from low to high beam trick didn't work any more. I got my switch from the dealer less than $100 US.

Update on the prob....wasn't the headlight bulb, and wasnt the headlight switch. Turned out it was indeed the multifunction switch. Interesting thing is, is that on the main wiring harness where the switch connects into, there was evidence of it being what looked like melting or burning on the harness itself. The guys at dealership said this was a common prob with the Durangos and Dakotas for this year, and they fixed harness without replacing the whole harness itself. Anyone else had this happen? and if so was there any probs afterward with it?. I'm a little concerned that with the melting on the harness it might happen again. Heck of a place to get into and put out a fire if need be!

Hi,

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the Daytime Running Lights module?

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500, just imported it into Canada, I have ordered a Hamsar DRL module but I have no idea which one is for sure the ignition wire. I mean... I know that it should be a dark blue wire, but I'm not sure if the one I think it is is really the ignition wire. This one (I've removed the trim panel under the steering wheel) looks thicker than the other wires. Can anyone tell me if I've identified the right wire?

thanks

Yes, same exact thing happend to my 96. I could smell something burning a week or 2 before I knew what the problem was. The switch stopped working one night and I had to drive for an hour with fog lights only.

I have the same problem w/98 Durango lights mentioned in this topic, but the multi-switch did not fix the issue...

Please offer any more information on possible resolution.

Thanks in advance!
