Okay, i bought a 93 dakota 5.2 ext cab for 400 dollars that would not start, because i am fairly good with vehicles and figured it was somehting simple. after checking for spark and fuel pressure, i determined i wasnt getting any fuel pressure. i was able to locate one of the problems. under the fuse box, there were three wires going into 1 that were corroded. i wired them all together and the truck started right up. i was pretty happy and drove the truck around, and it ran great. i thought it was fixed. then when i tried to restart it, i couldnt get fuel pressure again. if i jump started it it would get fuel pressure and start. so i assumed it was bad battery and connection with the terminals. i purchased a new battery and cleaned the terminals. still no start, put jumper cables on and it started right up? after driving it for about 15 minutes, i parked it. when i tried to restart it wouldnt even start with jumper cables. i removed the fuel tank and hooked the pump up direct to a battery. it would run like 3 seconds (like the pump should do when it first is turned on?) and then shuts off. shouldnt the pump run constant when directly wired to battery? any thoughts would be appreciated, and if someone has a wiring diagram for all the fuel pump wires it would be nice. another thing, what tells the pump to turn on? is their a pressure switch or something that could be acting uP? thanks

I believe that, when hooked directly up to a power source, the fuel pump should run constantly.
I know that the PCM controls the fuel pump by the fuel pump relay. I believe how the power to the pump works is as follows: when you initally turn the key to ON (but not start) the PCM provides a ground for the fuel pump relay (there-by sending power to the fuel pump) for a few seconds to put pressure on the sytem. Than, when you turn the key to START and while the engine is running, there is a constant ground provided to the relay, which, therefor, constantly provides power to the pump.
I do not know exactly where the fuel pressure regulator plays a role in sending electricity to the fuel pump, but, than again, the pressure regulator is integrated into the fuel pump, so even if thats bad, you would have to get a new pump.

I mean, since you removed the fuel pump, and benchmarked it directly connected to a 12v DC source, I really can't think of anything else than the pump is shot.

The computer turns the pump on for a few seconds to charge the system. Then if it sees an ignition pulse it turns the pump back on. If a pump has been run hot too many time (low fuel) it will start to drag and draw high curent. The regulator is machanical only, it is the shape of a puck and sits on top of the tank.

Well you bench tested the pump and it quit. So I would say you pump is junk . But do not dry test your new pump. I was not going to pay the dealer over $375 for a complete assenble, so I got a replacement pump for a newer mustang and fixed mine

Do these in tank pumps have a thermal overload in them to cut them out if they overheat (ie. running them dry)???

it sounds to me more like a relay issue simply because the truck will start when jumped if the pump were actually shot the pump wouldnt start at all,on the other hand it may have been going and just finally went...So far as an overload protection I couldn't tell you but it makes sense that if there is no fuel passing through the pump that it would shut down to keep it from burning up.
