Sounds to me like the T-Case was replaced with a newer model. You just lack that selection now but no big deal.

4 Low - Oh SHIT were going to die!
Neutral - Towing
2 WD - Normal Day to day driving
4 Hi - Its snowing

IN the 98 and 88 year models you could have the choice of the 2 different 4 wheel drive features,
they were something like this: 2wd 4HI N 4LO or the 2 HI 4 Part Time 4 Hi N 4LO (this was called a full time transfer case)
Starting in the year 2000 they did away with the 2wd selection. And all trucks had 4PT 4HI N 4Lo.
With the about models the Part time switch didn't lock the the out put drive shaft axles. So it was like an open rear in a way. In the HI4 and LO4 the transfer cse lock the front and rear drives shaft to a 1 to 1 ratio, (like a posi tracking) the front and rear axles were open rears, uinless you ordered the posi traction rear, THe front axle is always an open rear. If the front axles was locked you tires would turn the same speed all the time and you wouldn't be able to steer
then in the later years they came out with the dash switch, what brought back 2wd but also introduced the AWD selection also

Sounds to me like the T-Case was replaced with a newer model. You just lack that selection now but no big deal.
i'll pull the numbers off the t-case tommorrow since im dropping my skid plates to clean them off since i noticed dried mud on them an di dont wait it to ruin any of my seals n cause something to go bad.

You do not have the FT (awd) option in this x-fer case.
2wd=normal driving
4HI=snow,mud,gravel ect. where extra traction is needed
4LOW= same as above but with more torque going to the ground
If you use 4HI on patchy snow covered roads take the x-fer case back to 2wd when turning corners on dry/wet pavement. This will prevent the x-fer case from binding up. JIM.

thats what my 98 has....but when its in 4x4, the part time light only comes on once and a while wether its in high or low.....it hasnt stayed on since last winter...so now i have a hard time remembering if its in 4x4 without looking at the lever....
i have only used the 4 low so far to pull a few people out of ditches....otherwise ive had to use 4x4 high alot lately due to the snow....
but what i was wondering, is how long can you keep it in 4high when there isnt snow on the road..but say maybe there is about 2 miles down the road?????but anyways, how long can you keep it in 4 high without slippery roads???

Not correct. I will also report more information later:
A full-time case is permanently in four-wheel drive, so no action on the driver’s part is required to engage the system. In order to use a full-time transfer case on hard-packed surfaces without binding the driveline, the case must be built to allow driveline slip between the front and rear wheels. Some (like the NP203) contain differential gears inside the case, while others use some sort of clutch or viscous coupling between the T-case and the front driveshaft. In both cases, there is typically a means to lock the slipping mechanism for a true 50/50 torque split when conditions warrant.

ive had this rango for 1 year....and its basically the first 4x4 ive owned, other then my 1980 bronco, but the 4x4 didnt work right on it...i just dont wanna mess anything up too bad because the warranty ended about 3,000 miles ago...
i do really love my rango, especially while playing in the snow

well, it hasnt gotten me stuck yet.....and from now on im only putting these tires on it....nothing else...
my road was covered in about 4 feet of snow on friday and there were no tracks down it to drive through....but these tires brought me right through without any problems.....
on saturday i had to go and pull a woman i know out of the ditch and today a had to help get out a 1980's 4x4 full size blazer and a minivan....but were stuck pretty good....i spun the tires just a little getting out the blazer, but i was also on a sheet of ice....the minivan was no problem....
so in other words, i love these tires and they were well worth the $200.00 i paid for them from the junk yard
and i was told that 31's arent good in the snow.....ha!
