Hi, I'm new to this list and to the States. I bought my '95 Stealth (60,000 mls) about 6 weeks as I needed some transport and it's a beautiful car..... someone in the past has obviously cared a great deal for it. I bought from a dealer as is - no warranty. Having driven less 1000 mls, my transmission has packed in and the car has been towed to a local transmission garage. They are quoting me $2,500 to fix it. The garage seems legit but that amount seems a lot. They said they intend to take it apart and expect to find the planetary gears are duff and will rebuild it from there. However I've rung a local parts place and a new transmission is 'only' $1287. Have tried to get a quote from another garage - AAMCO but they say they can't quote me a price till they see the car. Have tried contacting the used car garage I bought from but they are no help. Can anyone tell me - is $2500 an ok price to fix the transmission do ya think. Also, can anyone tell me if transmission failure is a gripe with these cars. Before anyone asks - yes I checked the fluid.........That is about my level of techinal expertise I'm afraid. Thank you Sue

Hi Sue, what were the symptoms of the tranny that caused you to take it to the shop? $2500 does seems about average maybe a little high, but nothing on these cars come cheap. The new tranny at $1287 I suspect is a rebuilt one, it would more than likely cost $1000 to get it installed at a garage. I have an ATX (automatic) in my Stealth with 70K mile on it, the original went bad at 60K and was replaced by the dealer. If properly cared for the tranny should last a long time, but it seems that the mitsu trannys are not as tough as they should be. If/when you get it replaced, be sure to change the fluid every 25K or so, that will lengthen the life of the tranny greatly. Welcome to the states.
