Durango, 2001, Blower switch only works on the High Position. Wife getting irritated I haven't fixed it yet. Sounds like a switch swap.
How to best pry off face so I can get at the switch? Any suggestions please...

Must be a common thing. I just bought my 01' last weekend and the switch is broke. It actually does not work at any speed. The rear control knob works fine at all speeds but the front does nothing.
Fortunetly it is still under the factory warranty (under 36K) plus I bought an extended warranty for an additional 3Yr 36K.
Anyone else have this problem?

Do not pry off the face! You have a faulty blower motor resistor assembly. The part number is 04885635ab If you look on the bottom of the motor housing on the passenger side (about where the passenger toes would point) you will see a wire harness that is a long oval in shape and has 5 or 6 wires in it. You will need a 7 or 8mm 1/4 inch drive socket with a u-joint attachment. on the firewall side of the connector, there is a sliding lock that keeps the connector on the plug. you will have to slide the lock toward the drivers side and the squeeze a small blak tab to pull the connector off of the plug. Once the connector is off, use the socket to remove the 2 screws. It will drop right down once the screws are removed. Once it is removed, it looks like a 2 inch by 3 inch by 16th of an inch thick piece of metal with a plug on it. The resistor pack dissipates ALOT of heat so do not take it out until the truck has been off for 30 minutes or so. I priced the part at a dealership in Colorado 2 days ago for $12.77 YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE THE FACE OR DASH OFF! LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES AND GOOD LUCK. LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS AND DOUBLE CHECK THE PART NUMBER BEFORE YOU PURCHASE AS YOU MIGHT HAVE A DIFFERENT REVISION.----ERIC

Eric,
Many thanks for your input! I too have just discovered the same problem with the heater in my 2001 Durango. After reading your input it was now a piece of cake to fix and especially to find where the component was hidden. Sure enough the blower motor resistor assembly was cooked. Having very low mileage (23K) on the vehicle, this was not something I had expected.

Spot on instructions!!! I've had my 2001 Durango for several years and thought the 2 lower blower speeds were just really weak. Yesterday the 3rd speed went out-only had high left. Saw this post, just put in the resistor (12$), and all is working well...

Excellent information. Mine just went out this morning on my way to drop family off at the airport. Only the High position works. I was already looking at how to get the face cover off and searching the net for a replacement switch. Best info I've got on this site yet. Thanks again and Happy New Year to all.

Ok, called the dealer this morning and asked for part# 04885635ab, he informed me that it had been replaced by part# 05174618AA. He warned me that it wouldn't look anything like what I have but it is "new and improved". I went and picked it up at lunch, installed it tonight and everything works perfect. ericruyle, thanks again for the info I was glad to find out I didn't have to take the dash apart and replace the switch.

Yup. I had the same problem awhile back. Fortunately, someone from this forum gave me the same advice. I fixed the problem in 10 minutes. The old part was some cheesy half baked piece of crap with "Made in Mexico" stamped all over it, the new one looks like it will last. Hopefully!

hey all im new here. my blower went out in my durango a couple of days ago, only high worked. read your info from here and it was the resistor. i would have never found it either, and you right, does not look the same, i even questioned the dealer! around 9 bucks and 15 minutes, everything works like a champ!!! thanks.

I cannot thank you enough for this information. I have a 2002 Durango. I was on my way home from the store and the blower went out. I called the dealership and they had the part in stock. It took me about 15 minutes to install and it is working perfectly now. Thanks again for the help!

What's up people,
I'm on my second run in with this prob. First time was about 25,000 and now no heater again at 50,000. first time was done under warranty. This time I took it in the day before i went on vacation hoping they would fix it so i would have A/C. They told me the blower motor was also shorted out because of the resistor failing and they had to order one. They say the damage is about 335.00. I didn't take it back to them because i want to check the motor for myself. Does this sound right? Thanks to all in here for any info.

When I first encountered the problem I thought it was the motor that had went bad so I went to checker I think it was and picked up a motor for around $45 at the time, not sure what it is now. I replaced the motor, as it's in the same general area as the resistor, but that didn't fix my problem. Sure was mad sitting out in the ND winter with two portable heaters in the back so I could have some heat while I replaced the motor when it wasn't the motor that was bad. So I did some research and found that it was most likely the resistor and changed it out. Sure enough the resistor was the problem. If the blower motor is bad, on an 01, it's fairly easy to replace. I would think you would be able to replace it yourself without to much of a problem for less than 335.00. If the motor is bad though, then most likely it can cause the resistor to continue to go bad.
On another note, I'm glad I could help those in replacing their resistor. When I created the page, I never knew that it was, or going to be, that common of a problem.
