Most of the guys at the race tracks and drag strips around here use Royal Purple. Not sure how it is for everyday use, but if they trust their engines under race conditions to it.......

I've used Castrol GTX since I started driving (more years ago than I care to remember). It's never let me down. 7 quarts of Castrol GTX 5W-20 with a Fram PH-16 in my wife's R/T every 3 months or 3000 miles - whichever comes first.

Can't speak for the Royal Purple.

I run the Mobile 1 w/PH-16 filter. I can barely justify the cost of Mobile 1 much less Royal Purple.

Why would you need an additive? The Mopar oil used is a part synthetic oil similar to Castrol's part synthetic. You will want to be very careful NOT to put in a additive that makes the oil thicker, as this will stop the MDS from working. Royal Purple is an excellent pure synthetic oil, like Mobile 1, however, the RP makers insist its properties are much slicker than Mobile 1. Most of the "ricers" around here use RP. However, no matter what you do, change oil AND filter at every 3,000 miles.

I will swear by Mobil 1, i used it in my mitsu eclipes, broke the timing belt so i had to rebuild it at 120000 miles, no measurable wear. Its worth the extra cash.

Is anyone going longer than 3,000 miles on synthetic?

I have read about and know people running 5000+ miles between changes. One friend recently did used oil analysis at 5000+ miles and the oil was still in great condition.

I'm doing the old school thing and canging every 3000 and I'm wondering if I'm wasting (synthetic) oil doing that.

Oil is still cheaper than motors.

I use a synthetic hi mileage oil in my truck. Had to replace the lifters last year (100K+) because the springs in a couple of them were getting weak and they weren't pumping up. You could almost eat out of the block and the bottom of the lifters where they rub against the cam were still convex. Normally by then they have become worn flat or concave.

I'm sticking with the 3 month/3K routine. You save money in the long run.

I went to 5000 miles between on the eclipes, no problems. My brother owned a garage and had results from a test where they went 100000 miles on mobil 1 with no break down. Not that i'd do it but nice to know if holds its own.
