What all is involved in a gas to diesel conversion and is it even worth the time? I'm working with an '86 Jeep Cherokee XJ that has 215k miles on it and I have to rebuild or replace the 2.8L that's in it. Was diesel even an option that year? If not, will another year work in it? Can I resuse the auto tranny that's in it? Will I need to replace all the accessories as well (air con. pump, power steering pump, etc.)? I realize that I'll have to either replace or clean out the gas tank that's there, but what about the fuel lines themselves?. What about the coolent system? The electrical? Any info would be great. Not completly following what you said here. I should use a 318-360 BECAUSE I can only bolt to Chevy stuff (I though 318 was a Mopar only thing)? Or, because I can bolt right up, I should switch to a small block chevy? Which, if the later is the case, I would happily bolt in a small chevy block, but would it fit under the hood? It doesn't look as if there would be enough clearance.

If a small block (350 or smaller) would fit in there with little to no hassle, what engines are faire game? Any and all 350's? Only from years '85 to '90, etc?

did you ever convert your jeep to diesel or did you replace the gas with gas? either way, i have a 98 jeep grand cherokee with about 220 on the v8. thinking i will need to replace or rebuild. would like to put a diesel in but hear it is expensive and dont even know what would fit. any info you found in your search would be appreciated
