Unlease your beast... it's going to make a big difference. You'll probably notice drone between 15-2K.

Cut 'em loose BigBanana. Take off that big suitcase of a resonator in the middle and chop off the end mufflers and stick 40s on. You'll have a blast. However, be prepared for LOTS of interior noise and riding around by yourself -- you won't hear anything from a passenger, except they have a headache. I had that setup in my GTX and it was fun for a few blocks, but not on a trip!

Educate me on this one..How hard is it to do? Cheap fix huh? $70...Oh teach me wise ones...What and where are the resonators? I have knowledge of the mufflers and tailpipe...I hate to say I dont know alot about the location and use of the resonators. (Femanine stupidity)...Easy to modify? Jules

Pictures are worth many words... Resos are circled in Yellow. Look for Blastin Bob's tailpipes on E-bay. He makes some good ones that will clamp right up once you cut the resos out. The best way to delete the resos is to use a sawzall w/metal blade (also called a receptacle saw). Just cut and clamp on the tailpipe. You can also weld up pipe and tips which of course also entails a welder <= see your favorite muffler shop for this. Thumbnail Image

Ok I may be totally wrong but I understood the resos, circled in the pic, are at the rear of the exhaust. The muffler, what some call suitcase that describes it's size, is in-between the CAT/midpipes and the reso. In that case the reso is a suitcase and the mufflers are handbags

Reso clarification: The picture below is from the service manual section 11 page 3. The service manual actually calls the front chamber a Muffler/resonator but it always calls the rear chambers resonators. Here is the reason, see the following definition. resonator - n 1: a hollow chamber whose dimensions allow the resonant oscillation of electromagnetic or acoustic waves. In the case of the front "Suitcase" muffler on the Charger has a hollow chamber at each end and a center chamber that has sound absorbing material around perforated pipes. The exhaust is routed back and forth between the from and rear sections, through the center section. The chambers at each end could be considered resonators but there is still the center section is a muffler. The Daytona and R/T Performance Option suitcase muffler does not have a hollow chamber at each end. They have a perforated pipe with packing around it and that's all. The rear chambers are just two hollow chambers making them resonators. Thumbnail Image

Hey TX Mango, Hot enough for you? It's even HOT in Minnesota! It's so hot in Minnesota, we're only going to get 11 months of winter this year... I am going to through my two cents here to help. Most of the posters know I spent $700 for a Magnaflow system that drove me out of the car, and I had to replace the pretty MF "True-X" muffler to stop the DRONING. I replaced it with the stock resonator (suitcase) but left the MF 4" resonator rear tips on. Yes, I am running all resonators and no mufflers. When you posted your dictonary definition of a resonator you got the suitcase part right, but the back to pieces are mufflers. Yeah, yeah, the service manual says... but the manual is wrong. The back two are mufflers because 1) they are NOT hollow chambers, and 2) they have several chambers and pipes like a muffler that make it, well, a muffler. Go ahead, shine a light into one end, you'll never see light out the other end, because of the huge chambers and interior pipes. No, I'm not picking a episode for you and I to meet on Pinks. I just want to say that if the definition is correct, the drawing must be misleading. There is no way the back two are just resonators. I've been all through this with my muffler shop, and they called the back two mufflers before I even said anything. Also, Bigbanana, or is it Bigbanna, well, anyway, let us all know how you like your 40s. I liked the sound on mine (my muffler shop held up 40s to my stock X pipe and they DID sound good, but I was afraid of too much DRONE or just too loud. My car is now pretty good. Quiet idle, but loud and throaty under wide open throttle. I'm good. I hope you don't want to punch me in the nose. Magnaflow already did that...

Baldy, Go ahead and stay out... I'm not! I can't comment on the normal RT. On the Daytona the middle suitcase was the resonator. Not only did I have it removed, I cut it open afterwards. It was completely hollow. Is there anyone reading this forum that would call a hollow box that size a muffler? The two large bulbous things at the end of the tail pipes on the otherhand were quite baffled, heavy and seemingly restrictive. I removed the center portion and placed two tubular Magnaflow resonators, one in each pipe. I then had Spintech mufflers placed at the rear. I have virtually no drone and there was a definate seat of pants improvement. The sound when I get on it is nothing short of incredible. Light throttle is quiet. Mnboy, I really wanted to let you hear my car when you were out in Riverside as I am 10 miles from but I was so swamped around Father's day I dared not mention it.

KO, I don't really care what you call them "things". When I say cut out the resos just put your Mango filter on and translate resos to muffler... the two things at the rear, what ever they are. If you go purchase a muffler (Flowmasters/Magflow/DynoMax) it's my guess it'll be installed where that big thing right after the X pipe. Look at the CATbacks and where they place a muffler if applicable <= some don't have one. Some mufflers are straight through, I have one (DynoMax Ultra Flow X) in the garage and DynoMax calls this thing a muffler, hum... their in for a surprise because some will argue that point w/them. When your cursing around the internet and start talkin resos be careful and ask are there two or one of these reso things. The other Charger/LX sites have had this debate and they all deem the resos to be the rear ones, go figure. Just my 2 cents, which I know isn't worth much and now I'm all resoed out.

Ok, we're all getting tired of the resonator/muffler debate, and there appears to be some mislabeling with the Dodge manual as well, which isn't helping. I have seen misprints before in manuals and corrections sent out months later, if at all. All of you have posted good ideas at times and I have learned much from you, however, on this one, I am standing firm. We need not to spread misleading information as I have seen at times. Zedd hit the nail on the head. Daytona RT got it too. MangoInTX, I certainly understand your plight -- some places call a straight-thru muffler a muffler and some call it a resonator. In the specific case of the Charger, just look at your own definition and you got it right, but the end units are not just hollow chambers -- they are offset pipes, chambers and HEAVY like a standard muffler. Baldy and I seem to be polar opposites but we do see eye to eye often, and KONO opened this can of worms, by innocently asking BigBanana about the new exhaust... and then there's Dodgegirl who hides behind her "feminine stupidity", but don't let her fool you, she's as sharp as a tack... Zedd, I am sorry I missed our meeting. I would have really liked to hear a Hemi Charger with the Flowmasters on. My guess is it sounds deep, mellow, and loud when you're on it. For me, I'd love a ride in it to determine if it's too loud or just right. Maybe next Father's Day -- mark it on your calender. Now, let's all just get out there and have fun!

Thanks mnboy! I agree we should move along. This is a very debatable topic w/no clear winner. I’m purging resos from my vocabulary. Now get the tools out and cut those thingies or thing off the car!
