We are looking at purchasing a first generation Intrepid. Is there anything we should be aware of?

Any additional comments are much appreciated

Thanks
Dave

Not really an intrepid guy but stay away from the 2.7 liter. It may not be in the first gen anyway. I'm kind of looking at them too. Would like to find an R/T as my second car.

First generations have 3.3 and 3.5.
The 3.3 is the best way to go. That engine will not die. There is a lady on http://www.dodgeintrepid.net/ who has 500k miles on her 3.3. The ONLY work done to her car is she's on her third transmission, tune-ups, water pump replacement, and an injector fault. That's it.
Plus, when the transmission goes out, you can put in a performance 2.7L transmission in. The housing between the two are the same. All that's required is drilling one hole, rewiring the pcm plug, move transmission mounts, and a few other small modifications.

The 3.5L is good, but stick with the best engine made to date, 3.3.

Sorry, I have to disagree with scarface. I have a 3.5 and would have it no other way!!! Not only does the 3.5 have options that the 3.3 doesn’t, it’s a rocket ship with wheels!! It also has fine tuning options that the 3.3 doesn’t have such as the knock sensor. Yea the 3.3 is a good engine (I do agree it is better than the 2.7, not because of the size, but because of the sludge problem I have heard associated with the 2.7). If the car you are looking at is a 3.5, doesn’t disinclude it, grab it!!
PS My 97 3.5 has had the CAM sensor go bad and the MAP sensor (twice) go bad. They are easy quick fixes and I do not feel they represent the engines performance at all, only the luck of the manufactured electronic parts as these are the same parts that could be on the 3.3 engine.

I go with reliability over power...
I bought my police package trep because it was there for sale.

Here is one option that the first GEN 3.5 will never attain.

EDIT :
On my 3.3, before it was ran over, the car had unheard of mileage.
27-32/gallon, about 30 on 50/50 highway and city. It was rare, but it got to 35 to the gallon.
Another good reason.

Plat +4
True CAI (civic intake pipe w/cone filter, filter for each TB outlet, 4 total)
Peak coolant
While driving, she ran a full notch cooler than stock, never came remotely close to the halfway mark.
