Just as I was to accelerate after a traffic light, it went "clang" and the car would not move. ..Found that the left driving shaft had got out of the transaxle stub shaft . Anyone experienced this before?
Other details: The shaft (complete c.v. +shaft assembly) had been changed 3 months ago and had a lot of driving since (so why did it not slipped out before?) THe car suffered a side accident from the rear right side recently - damage limited to rr door and right rear quarter panel .Car running fine and straight - until the shaft went out.
Is it possible that a right shaft be delivered intead of a left shaft? COuld it be installed without noticing the difference--like, it the right shaft a bit shorter?

mmm...forget that shaft story. I had got the impression that it was out because I could see about on inch lenght of the splines on the stub shaft but then, after checking more closely, the other side was similar. So the shafts are in their proper position and the damage is internal...In DRIVE, a lot of things rotate with the engine in the transmission including the park lock which is very close to the differential, but the park lock will not hold the car at all.

If someone recalls such an event, just give me a clue. But I'm in for an inside job.

Finally...sorry for the confusion ...first message was right, third was erroneous. Indeed the shaft had slipped out, and my only conclusion is that at the time it was replaced (by my care..shame) , it was not fully pushed in to its correct position, so that the retaining clip was not properly engaged. I post this to alert those who might do the job just as I did: it does not come in easily because the clip exerts some friction: use some force - i used a blunt 2 x 4 piece of lumber and hammer - but be careful not to break the rubber seal.
It must go almost fully in..may be 3/16 in. clearance between transaxle and shaft end.
I just wonder why it did not slip out sooner...may be, after all, the side jerk played some role in that.
