I have a 87 Pacifica with a Turbo I with about 100,000 miles on it. It recently it seems the turbo is not working.
The "Turbo Vac/Boost" gauge shows 15 Vac when idling and will only go to
2.5 Boost when I floor it. I think it usually went up to about 7 or 8 Boost.
The turbo does not kick in nor do I hear the low level high pitch whine of is spinning up and down. It also now lacks power at the higher RPM's.

Is my turbo shot

Any suggestions on where to start looking would be great.

Thanks

Did you check all of the hose's from the turbo to the throttle body? Also check the vac line from the waste gate to the solenoid to the inner fender for splits and damage. Any loss in these to area's will result in low boost operation.

Hope this helps

It's most likely that your turbo is shot. It is however possible that the wastegate is frozen (not literally) open and is letting the exhaust bypass the impellers causing little to no boost, they do tend to get very rusted over the years. First check out the wastegate actuator, it is a much cheaper and easier fix.

I've check all the vac lines and the from what I can tell the wastegate actuator doesn't seem to be stuck. Oh by the way I forgot to mention that when I floor the gas pedal it really strains to reach 3500 - 4000 rpm and seems not to want to go any higher and has very
poor performance. This sounds like a clogged cat converter but my muffler and converter are only a few months old.

Get rid of them. You'll be glad you did and you may even wonder how you able to leave it on for so long.

I'd love to but here in BC we have yearly Aircare inspections that we must do in order to renue our insurance, and the prescence of the cat converter is one of the checks.

In that case, get a high flow cat and clamp it in place and have an exhaust place make you a test pipe. After the emissions check, swap out the cat for the test pipe.

Well finally figured it out. There was a chunk of the honey comb stuff broken off the old cat converter logded in
the "S" shape pipe between the cat and muffler which was blocking airflow. Now all is good.
Thanks guys!!

Well it's great to hear that you got off lucky, most of the time it's far worse and more expensive. Big power losses on a turbo motor is usually from a bad turbo. Do you now have a whole new exhaust? If so I hope it didn't cost too much, because Forward Motion has a 3" turbo back exhaust that is mandrel bent and stainless steel with a high flow cat for $680. Here is a link to it: http://www.forwardmotioninc.com/html/catalog/intakes_exhaust.htm
