I am looking to replace the cold air intake system on my RT, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on which system performs better, Mopar or K&N.

Ive used k&n, but not on a charger, but i was impressed with it, so I'm gonna say k&n.

K&N reports 21 HP with the non-metallic CAI. Look at 63-1114 for a few bucks more. It's not flashy, but when you are going around or past someone, who can it see anyway! It's the better of the two for HP. Be sure to look at the bottom end of the engine too. Just remember an engine is an air pump, and the more you put in, the more you've got to get out. Good luck!

PS = my local Dodge dealer said they would NOT void my warranty...

Make sure you check with your dealership if you still have warranty on your vehicle. In many cases installation of K&N can void your warranty regardless of what the manufacturer tells you. My advice is go with the Mopar. I did.

Mikcle,

You've just been found guilty of aiding the fine folks in detroit that want to restrain the car buyer from purchasing parts or obtaining services from anyone but the dealership. Though urban legends can be fun at a sleep over, a camping trip or just trying to get your bobby sox girlfriend alittle closer, I don't think we need to help them perpetuate their grip on the fears of the buying public.

With exceptions, your warranty cannot be voided by installing bolt-on modifications that are on the outside of the drive train. Mods such as Cold Air Intakes, exhaust and in most cases, underpully, pumps and electrical systems cannot void a vehicle warranty.

In case you doubt my confidence, I've added the link to the government law on Automotive Warranty. With alittle research we can kill this urban legend & further frustrate our good friends in detroit and overseas. He's the gun.. load it with information.. and go postal brother!!

Who is installing the CAI? Are you doing it or the dealership? If the dealership is doing it I can't believe they didn't say anything in regards to the warranty with an after market product. Daytona R/T is probably right with his info but I would suggest you ask to avoid a major headache down the road. Good Luck!

All ready asked and was told the same thing - federal law prohibits auto manufacturers from voiding factory warranties because of bolt on parts. My dealer even told me about the cat back exhaust, MP CAI, etc.

IMHO... 6 and 1/2 dozen (buy cheap and put your major HEMI bucks into another mod). They don't yeield that much HP but give a little cool sound.

I put a K&N drop-in filter on mine, I forget how mu$h I believe it was less than 30.00

I bought the Mopar one it looks like the car came w/ it stock. Very easy to install it took me 20 mins from start to finish. They even give you a stock part sticker that you can place on the radiator frame mount.

I heard from various sources, owners of other R/T's that a drop in K/N filter alone makes a good choice....

I had a cheap cold air kit and it did NOTTA !!! I would stick with MOPAR, which looks as if it was made by K/N, try the filter at $38.00 and not $ 275 and up !

(I have the Road & Track upgrade and only ran 14.5 @ 95 mph in the 1/4 mile !) ----> well off the normal 13.8 - 14.2 range !

They do the same as far as performance most just prefer the looks of the Mopar unit.

Two things to consider. One is that metal transfers heat which would negatively affect the density of the air mixture. The Mopar intake is metal not plastic like the K&N. The Mopar piece would be my fashion show choice but given it is over a $100 more than the K&N kit I went with K&N myself. Last night I saw a K&N Charger kit for under $200 on eBAY.

As far as just dropping in a filter it is only worth half the HP once you start making other mods such as exhaust and programmer. There is also a very audiable sound difference. A air intake adds a throaty sucking sound where as keeping the stock air box muffles this sound. However in the factory boxes defense it does assure a more cold air supply from outside of the engine compartment. But bottom line is that an aftermarket kit is superior to just a drop in filter or stock box. The metal to plastic difference is probably less than a 1 HP difference so make your choice based on appearance preference. I do know that most authorized Dodge dealers will remove even Mopar performance parts and replace it with stock before ever selling it on their lot so they have no preference to you using either when it comes down to it. They want it stock to ease warranty parts availability for resale.

In addressing warranties ... SEMA ... A Speciality Equipment Association that lobbies to keep OEM companies from making a monopoly out of replacement parts. Bottom line is that a manufacture (no matter how much the dealership service drive will lie to you to take your money) can not void warranties on your car for using a non-OEM replacement part. Think of the same simple principle as it applies to an oil filter. If it meets or exceeds specs they can not void warranties.

If a factory part such as the intake is replaced then only the removed part is voided. This does not apply to oiled internal engine/trans components. Hence once you tamper with a sealed part the warranty is void on that assembly.

Need additional help contact SEMA at www.sema.org
