Default quick electrical question

did a search, didn't find anything..

2001 dakota EC
i recently slapped some 20$ pep boys fog lights on and wired them straight into the main headlight circuit so i didn't have to install the toggle. they work but after about 10 min of driving with the lights on the headlights and hogs start to flash. i can just switch to my brights since the fogs go off when they're on, but why are they flashing like that?

i'm not blowing fuses and they don't have constant power like i've read in other forums, haven't been able to find this problem anywhere else.

am i drawing to much power and overloading the system? any ideas?

i patched the wire straight into the Blue/White Stripe wire that powers the headlights. i got to it in the harness that is right next to the fuse box on the left side of the engine bay. and grouded it on the battery. it's r***ed so the fogs turn on with the headlights and turn off, just like the driving lights, when the brights are clicked on.

do you think it might be that i'm taking to much power away from the stock headlights and it thinks they are about to burn out on me so it's giving me the warning? does it even do that with the headlights, like with the blinkers? and if this is the case, why does it wait a few minutes with the lights on to start flashing?

I'm no electrician, but could it be overheating the relay.
I have Hella 100 Watts Fog Yellow light and i have them with there own wire, fuse & relay system.[sm=smiley23.gif]
And they are not conected to the main car fuse box.[sm=smiley34.gif]

They are working fine!

yeah, i'm not really sure. it's not really connected to the fuse box though, i spliced into the wire on its way out of the fuse box. damn electricity.

I've seen this one a few times!!!
YES you overloaded the system and melted the headlight switch and possibly the connector!!!
Replace the headlight switch & Inspect the wireing. Wire your fog lights with a relay so it doesn't do more damage!!

mmm, no, i don't think i melted anything... yet. it that happened it should start flashing right when i turn the lights on, and when i disconnect the fogs the headlights work just fine. like i said, it takes about 10 min of driving for the lights to all start flashing.
still stumped

Default RE: quick electrical question

There is a relay in the box just for fog lamps. Make sure that relay is in and run the fog 12v to the pigtails that are already there for fog lamps(they may be hiding but they are there)The pigtails have both 12v and ground already there-just use that and then the relay will power the fogs instead of the headlamps. Its been awhile since I've added fogs to a vehicle but I know for sure the pigtails are there and you should be able to plug in the relay and change the headlamp switch to a fog style switch. Everything should work. I remeber on the early ones having to centersplice a wire but I dont think you will have to do that. Do everything else and if it still doesnt work let me know and I'll take one apart at work to jog my memory.
