Default 1998 D Key Fob

Some weird stuff..try to stay with me.

I bought a '98 D 5.9L. The original sticker said it had the security package, but it never did work. My key fob has no problem opening, closing the locks but the panic never worked. I went out to the truck this afternoon and the remote didn't unlock the doors so I figured batteries are dead. I go to Radio Shack and buy 2 new batteries (forget the #s but they are exactly the same part # and voltage).

I put them in and the remote no longer unlocks / locks the doors...on top of it when I use my key to enter the driver's side door, the alarm goes off...a first! Now to turn it off...it won't turn off. I stick the key in the ignition, turn to ON position - nothing.

Does anyone know if I'm supposed to do something to the fob after changing the batteries? And why would simply changing the batteries have such an effect like that?

thanks...

Do a search in this forums for programming your remotes. I have placed a PDF here somewhere on how to re-program your remotes for the 98 models.

wow ours does same thing. Use key in drivers door lock and alarm goes off. Unlock passenger or hatch door with key and alarm doesn't go off. I don't carry fob (wife does, it's her Durango) so I have to unloch from passenger side. Our key fob works though.

When I bought my Durango, it did not come with the remotes, so I had to pay for a set of them and get them programmed from the dealer. This was before I knew about the programming guide on the net. I remember also, when using a key to open the drivers door, the alarm goes off. The only way you can get the alarm to shut off is to relock the doors. I did this when I was inside the durango, I did not simply press down on the lock on the driver side door, I used the electric door lever to lock all doors and doing this, I was able to turn off the alarm and then able to start the Durango. Otherwise, you cannot start it while the alarm is on.

Here you go. I find the message in the forums and copy/pasted it here for your viewing pleasure.

Try this link. It has programming procedures for every make of remote for Dodge from 99-02. Since yours is a 98, it still may work. Who knows.

Well..tried the first thing the paper said..(hit the unlock key 5 times or whatever)....that seemed to work..now my alarm works but I don't get a comfirmation honk and the panic doesn't work. I tested the alarm by keeping the driver's side window down, locking the doors and waiting for the "security" blinking light to go out. Then opened the door.

I guess that's good enough...I usually replace the "panic" button with a .45 auto anyway. [8D]

Thanx for the replies too!!

have you tried the 2nd method? If I remember there are 2 possible ways to program the remotes from that website that displays the programming instructions??

Yeah, tried the second method also...seemed to do the same thing. Was able to get the security system working OK but no panic button.. [8D]
