just pick up a 1987 dodge daytona shelby z for a $100, got it for cheap cause the head gasket was possibly blown. turns out that head gasket was bad but wasn't the main problem. after taking the head of i relized that the turbo is shot. and i am not sure what i am going to do. Any one got any suggestion on how to go about doing this. not sure if to build it up or just to get it running again with replacement parts.

You can get another turbo cheap with that turbo as a core. I bought mine for my Shelby Z for $360 cash with my old blown one as a core and it's doing good still.

when you say save the turbo as a core do you mean just replace the internals and use the outer shell? or get another turbo and turn that one in to them? Since i have it all a part would it be worth to put a bigger turbo in and do some work to the intake man. and the exh. man. to get more performance out of it. is there anything else that would be worth replacing or modifing while it is apart? one more thing does the dayton run a narrow band o2 sensor or a wide band o2 sensor?

Turn your old one in when you purchase the new one. Since it's apart, if you got the money and time, I would definately upgrade everything that I could. Here are some links to Forward Motion: Intake & Exhaust Manifolds Turbochargers Forward Motion I have no idea which type O2 sensor is in it.

Im glad to see a good number of Daytona owners who have a forum to discus their cars. Im new to this so: Hi Everybody I have had 4 Daytonas, 1 es and the rest Shelbys; all awesome cars. But I am in need of some help..... I have my 87 shelby with a 89 t2 it is running great up to 4000rpms and about 8-10 psi of boost, it then falls on its face and then kicks back in and then falls on its face again over and over and over. I have put a new exhaust and fuel pump in and the problem is still there, it doesnt do it everytime but it does it alot. Anybody got any ideas? The only thing I can think of is maybe its time for a new turbo.. Thanks sperk1971

Sounds like fuel starvation/detonation to me. What octane fuel are you running?

The only engines that got them where the 2.5 tbi/turbo and the 2.2 VNT turbo engines. I think, but I'm not sure, I think the o2 is a wide band. I would have to consult the FSM on that one.

I am running 89 octane, the car has been sitting awhile and I decided to get it out to drive this summer. It had the problem when I put it up, but I always thought it was the exhaust. My mechanic just put a new fuel pump on for me and I asked him if it was a pump for a 89 shelby and he said it didnt matter they all carry the same pressure......, I thought the shelbys got higher output fuel pumps. thanks for the quick reply

You should run 92 octane in it just to keep it happy. Have you ever replaced the fuel filter? It sounds like the fuel flow is sufficient until the demand is great enough and a dirty filter will cause a throttle hickup where it falls on it's face and then picks back up just to fall on it's face again, over and over. The debris is getting pushed into the filter and then the pressure falls off between pump cycles letting the debris fall away from it until the pump forces it back into it again causing the stumble off and on. This is just one possibility though.

I bought mine at a local turbo shop, Ohio Cooler & Turbo I believe. I believe it was a rebuilt turbo and not a new one, but it was several years ago so I do not recall exactly which it was.
