Gearhead - that's great to hear! I too love this truck and am hoping Dodge can come up with a solid solution for this problem. I deomonstrated the issue to my wife this weekend. I already have the aluminum wheels, which kind of stumped me as most with this problem have steel. She noticed the problem comes and goes, and is usually at highway speeds. As I mentioned in a previous post, her father (my father-in-law) works at the DaimlerChrysler PG in MI. I sent him the full TSB and he is inquiring within. Once I find anything out, I'll share what info I can. In our last converstaion we learned this poses no safety issues and was discovered shortly after the Dakotas were rolled into production. At this time, I'm refraining from taking ours to the dealership until I can learn more.

I don't intend to sit idly by. I really hope they can solve the issue because I truly like the truck. However, squeezing the lemon is on my mind!!

Hey Airborne82 - not my stlle either (sit and wait), but luckily we have another vehicle to use until I see some sort of final report around the issue / cause. My take is they new this when they released the vehicle, since it doesn't seem to be an issue with the '06 models. Wondering what the real deal is here. I have the symptoms, but a lot of mismatch in all the postings. Good luck to you! I'll post what I do / find out as time goes on.

Airborne, if you have steel wheels that's a big part, if you have the cast wheels and it is an 05 then it needs the new 06 brakeshoes in the rear. I have 400 miles on mine since the last trip in and it seems fine now, this after 6 visits and four months of this brake shake thing. Dodge indeed knows about it, said the shoes in 05 are to rigid and do not make contact with the surface of the drum when pressure is applied, the 06 are more flexible and conform to the shape of the drum. I know how you feel, my neighbors think I change cars daily, I've had 4 rental loaners, for as long as a week each, but to my dealers credit Kendall here in Cottage Grove, they never gave up on it and called in the tech this last time and now unless something else goes bad it's good. I have 8200 miles on it now and 1200 of them are going back and forth as my dealer is 85 miles away. I still lost out on the gas though filling up rentals and my own. The last time they filled mine but would not make good on gas. I know it's not their problem that I live far away..hope this may help.

Should they be replaced? Or, the new brake shoes with that rim? Thanks for the info by the way.

Sounds like the wheels are not the problem then so I would ask about the replacment shoes for the rear. The only axles that needed replacment where stamped with an M, mine had it and they replaced them. I know how you feel, it is very frustrating to pay good money and have all this troulbe.

So are you guys saying that this shouldn't be a problem with the 06s? Cuz if it is a problem with the 06s I'll be bringing it in soon to have them check everything.

Hey Frenchy - it is noticeable enough that you would know. I received word from my father in-law today who had a chance to speak with the brake division at DC. Below is what was relayed to me. I have received information from the "brake group" relative to the rear "shudder" experienced during higher speed braking on your Dakota. The Brake people have found that over 90% of the customers are satisfied with the application of the current TSB. In the cases where the TSB does not totally address the issue, the dealership replaced the original steel wheels with aluminum cast wheels - this extra step took care of nearly all the remaining issues. This gets sticky since the cause of the "shudder" can be traced to other suspension issues which exacerbate "shudder" from other sources. At no time were there any references to safety related issues. My suggestion, based on the information gleaned from the brake group is, to allow application of the TSB and see if it addresses any degree of the problem. The next step would be for the dealership to contact the Technical Representative to see if a set of new aluminum wheels (assuming steel are present) can be installed to further address the condition. EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THIS POST DESERVES CREDIT FOR GETTING TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS BY COLLABORATING ON EXPERIENCES AND LESSONS LEARNED! SOME, UNFORTUNATELY HAD A MORE PAINFUL EXPERIENCE THAN OTHERS, BUT THE INFO SHARED IS HELPING OTHERS AVOID SIMILAR SCENARIOS! I have the aluminum wheels and expect only the work in the TSB will need to be completed - as others have pointed out here. The other day, traveling about 70mph, it would come and go but was very noticeable. My wife, who used to test drive vehicles for DC was in the truck and agreed this was abnormal. A friend of ours with an '06 4x4 SLThas not experienced any such issues and is at 6,000 miles. I was also informed, as others have posted, that this is noticebale as early as the first 100 miles but can appear later on as well, as in our case. I've yet to see anyone post the problem for an '06. I'm giving [Mel] a wash and detailing this week and will take it in for this service......we'll see......good luck to everyone!

Frenchy, Saroni, I have been watching/reading this thread and other threads regarding the brake vibration for a good while now. Especially while waiting for my 06 QC 4.7L to be delivered. I have 1250 miles on my DAK with a combination of mountain, city, highway, and towing at speeds ranging from 45 to 70 mph. The harder part was the slower mph in the mountains along some state park roads. Not a Porsche, but handles very well and from easy - to moderate - to hard braking my 06 has performed without vibration. I do not have ABS, just front disc, rear drum. So far so good, and I hope it continues that way.

Yo GemmySan! Glad to hear you're cruisin' without problems! I absolutely love this vehicle, and when I finish adding the extras it will be that much better! The only other *issues* I have are with the airbag light coming on for no apparent reason (does happen when I hit a pot hole or small bump and stays lit), and the passenger side front window goes up and down very slowly (there is a TSB on this also). I'm having them look at those as well, but want them to focus on this shudder issue more than anything - so I'll probably add those when I pick up the vehicle --- an ooops, forgot to mention this.... (don't want them working on too big of an order). I just hate going to the dealership for ANY reason!!! All in all, that's it!!! Sounds like the 06' has had these issues corrected, based on repairs, etc. for '05s. Since the 05' was a new model year, I'm not necessarily surprised that there are issues...and there are probably more we don't know about or won't notice until the miles rack up, but such are cars...

ORIGINAL: butchowens I found myself compelled to comment on your vibration problem. I too own a new 05 4wd (in my case) CC Dakota. I too experienced a vibration issue with the vehicle. After reading your posts I took mine to my dealership over the Christmas holiday. They told me that there was a TSB and ordered the necessary items. They turned the front rotors, replaced the needed hardware in the back and test drove the vehicle. They immediately called me and informed me the vibration was still there. They had an idea and asked my permission to perform a test. They asked if they could perform a "roadforce balance" test on my tires and the warranty usually would NOT cover this. Further they found TWO bad tires causing this problem. After a few calls directly to D.C. I found that the factory will not cover tire issues of this nature. They and the dealership STRONGLY URGED me to take the issue up with Goodyear as this was their problem. We collectively decided to replace one tire and use the spare as the other. I was VERY pleased at what the dealership did and suggested considering the circumstances. They really could not do much about the tires other than take it in the shorts for the monetary loss. They covered ALL of the labor and road force balaned all four tires at their expense. I had but to purchase one tire at a discounted price. I am VERY pleased at what they tried to do to help me. I ,however will NEVER use Goodyear tires again. I will use Michelin tires just like the ones I put on my 01 4wd CC truck. I hope that this is helpful. Did this take the shimmy out while driving (not just braking)?
