Volkswagen Twincharger FSI

Turbocharging or supercharging? That is the question. When pondering the query, Volkswagen got creative and decided, “Why not both?” The ground-breaking “Twincharger” -- the world’s first twin-turbocharged FSI engine—features both an exhaust turbocharger and an intake supercharger (or compressor). So armed, the small-displacement (only 1390 cc), 170-hp engine has a “have my cake and eat it, too” mentality, offering low-end grunt via the compressor and high-end power through the turbo; thus, each technology’s weak spot has been negated by the other’s strong point, e.g. turbo lag is irrelevant thanks to the compressor’s instant, off-the-line response. The Roots-type supercharger is operated by a magnetic clutch integrated in a module inside the water pump, and is utilized at engine speeds below 3500 rpm. Above that point, the turbo kicks in, delivering the necessary high-rpm boost pressure. VW claims the Twincharger delivers the torque equivalent (177 lb-ft at 1750 to 4500 rpm) to a 2.3-liter, naturally aspirated engine, yet delivers 20 percent better fuel economy (39 mpg). In addition to the 170-hp version, VW also showed a 140-hp, 1.4-liter Twincharger.

Volkswagen is trying to turn themselves around because of low sales. This thing sounds cool.

VW's worldwide profit slid from $3.6 billion in 01' to $850 million last year. There's been reports that VW may be seeking to cut as many as 10,000 jobs also. So much for my theory??

Thats impressive but its not impressive 170 HP is nothing to brag about seeing as how a 2.3 liter motor isnt making the same power as a Honda 2.3 liter from say an SI prelude...thats nearly 200 n/a so ppl will depend on the aftermark for any upgrades tho im sure it wouldnt take much to boost em both and nearly double or triple the output...but im sure the CI s need to get a little bigger too... How sweet would it be to hear the whine of the supercharger and the turbine at the same time you mash the gas???? LOL

It's much smaller then a 2.3L it's only 1390cc, that almost a motor cycle engine. And remember Honda tunes all the Torque from there motors for HP, and torque is much more important for daily driving.
