Hi I have a 99 ram 1500 with the 5.9L engine and 4x4. Everything on the truck is stock and we just put a new transmission and torque converter in it as because we were told that this was needed and we were revving to the moon and going little to nowhere.

We have installed these items and the truck runs well but seems to lack power for the size of the engine it has. The truck downshifts and revs to 3000rpm when encountering what seems the slightest hill, or even pulling a trailer with skidoos or seadoos the truck revs to the moon and is very slow accelerating.

When going to various dealerships we were told this was normal and that its just the way it is. Is this truck actually slow? or does it have potential by doing some simple mods?

Thanks in advance

Hey there, Little more info is needed. Are you extended cab ? What gears do you have ? How many miles. I would say you truck is slow, but it could be made a lot faster.

4x4 loses you a few hp to the rear wheels. Maybe your shift points are off if its seems to change at the wrong time.

Also, what tires are you running? This will also make a difference, I've got 285's on & the hp is o.k., but would be a much better driver if I had 4.10's. Before buying my truck, I test drove a '98 360 CC 4x4 w/stock tires & it was pretty impressive, so a gear change would definatly help.

This truck is a quad cab with 265/75/16 tires. It has a 46RE Transmission and a CORPORATE 9.25 LD rear axle with a 231HD Transfer case.

It is and has always been gutless.

!!! This message is being posted as a follow up of the previous one!!

The transmission has been replaced and rebuilt several times over as well as torque converters changed on it. It has had a large aftermarket tranny cooler installed and still the fluid is going black in it after only a week or so.

It has never seemed as if we have gotten a positive engagement by the transmission. It always seemed like the engine would roar but that it was not connected solidly with the drivetrain ((like you would feel if it was a standard) or perhaps a Chevy?)).

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

When you install the torque converter, are you filling it with fluid before you install it? If not you're gonna cook that new transmission. Also, blow the cooler lines out with compressed air to get all the crap out of them. Also try removing the check valve from the cooler line cause those tend to plug up. Are you using the correct type of transmission fluid?
