Default problem removing shocks

1996 dodge dakota

Trying to replace shocks . having problem with getting top bolt removed - when trying to remove spins rod in shock around.
tried clamping rod but does not hold . Anyone seen this before. Do i need a special tool to remove the bolt ?

yes

they do sell a special tool to remove shocks.
umm....autozone or O reilly's or advanced auto should have what you need
