A great majority of people know that a truck is used for hauling and transporting heavy objects. Today people buy a truck for many other reasons. Why did you purchase a truck? :)
I had borrowed my friend's Ford F-150 for a few weekends and thought I liked driving a full size truck if the brakes didn't suck so badly. Then I found out that Ford is not a good representation of full size trucks. Once I test drove a regular V8 Ram, I was hooked. I was all set to get the V8 Ram when my friend with the Ford convinced the Hemi is well worth the extra $900 and it would have better resale value.

Well I got my first truck when I was 16. an 88 Nissan Pick up that my Dad bought me because we needed a Farm truck and he just sold his Dualy Ram... after that I was hooked on Trucks and hating cars ever since, I have owned a couple cars and SUVs though :( When I was 18 a 99 Ford F-150 was purchased for me as a Graduation present. I couldn't exactly complain about the choice of vehicles being it was a Gift EVEN though my Dad knew I hated Ford and Loved Dodge... lucily I was hit by a Semi going 75 in 2001 and it was totaled (PHEW). But even since that first truck its all I can ride in. Plus all of my friends say cars to fit my personality.. I belong in a Truck.
I have never hauled anything in my life (towed anything)... I get to this weekend though WOOHOO!!!
I guess I just like Trucks because truck owners are a different breed of people... I like em Big, I like em Loud and I like em Dead Sexy... I just don't see CARS as sexxy unless we are talking about old Muscle cars, Imports (italion cars) and / or Bentley and Rolls.
Trucks are Dead sexy... especially Chicks in Trucks.. There was this FINE women at the Car wash today washing her truck... it was so sexy.

Believe it or not, I bought my first truck because we wanted to start camping and it was needed to haul the bicycles and gear. We graduated from the tent to a pop-up so had to have the truck to pull that, finally going from that to a travel trailer which definitely calls for a good truck.
So I'm on my 3rd Dodge truck and now wouldn't drive anything else. When I ride in my wife's Honda, I think I'm in a go-cart and everything around me, scares me, but back in my truck I'm king of the road.

I've always had a truck of some sort, and always will. They are just too useful not to have. Now asking me why I own a car is a whole other story. So far 5 trucks to 1 car.

Wow, I did not expect such a great response to my question. Thanks all, you have just confirmed my reason for having this baby. My first truck is a Ford F-150 SLX 2001 V6. The other day I drove it. It was much lighter than the Dodge of course. I enjoyed the speed and the gas savings, but I must admit. It was strange jumping from the Dodge in to the Ford. The Dodge is certainly a larger, more protective smoother running vehicle. Thanks all. I really appreciate your comments. I want to read more of these.

Luck, pure luck. I had my heart set on a (don't laugh) Honda Element. Always liked Honda. The day before I was going to go trade in my Wife's old Saturn SL2 on an Element, it was damaged in a hit and run accident. Being a person with scruples I decided to have it fixed before I traded it in.
While the Saturn was in the shop, a total of four days, I had a rental car. A 2004 Dodge Ram 4X4 with the 4.7 Liter engine. I had to take a road trip to Omaha, and during the trip I fell in love with the Dodge. I got my Saturn back on a thursday, and by Friday night I had signed the paperwork on My new Hemi. I took Delivery on the following monday.

That is a weird story, but a good one. I'd like to think that the powers that be didn't want you to have a Honda. It was the will of the gods that made you cross paths with the Ram and get one.

For a couple good reasons, firstly I started my own company, PGB Superior, a bullet casting business, and I have to be able to fetch a ton of lead alloy at a time from anywhere, as well as take loads of product to gun shows. Secondly, I had ridden in my girlfriends Ram 2500 Cummins, and fell in love with it right then. Now I have one too. Thirdly, I love camping in style, with 12x20' tent, Persian rug, potted palms, beer tap, movies, music, grill, stove, oven, and lots of weapons and ammo. Now I can.

Straight out of Xray school, 1983, I bought a rice-burning Toyota SR5. In 1996 traded that in for a '96 used Chevy S10. When I fell in love with a 2003 Atlantic Blue QuadCab HEMI SLT, I passed it on the car lot for 2 months. Finally, my wife got tired of all the whining and gave me the go-ahead to buy this truck. My son(13) told me, if I didn't get the HEMI, to not come home!!!I use the truck to haul my bicycles, and to fetch my toys from Home Depot.
This is our fifth Dodge vehicle. We've had 3 Grand Caravans, and my wife currently drives an '02 Durango. I am trying to talk her into the HEMI Durango when this lease is up, but she wants a P/T Cruiser, Turbo, convertible...

So this year I bought a 2001 and here I am with a 25gallon tank and the highest gas prices in history. Oh well - I'm gonna love on it and hook it up with mods regardless...

Why did I buy a truck?
The reason I got a truck is because I am 6 ft 5 tall and 275 lbs. I like that I can haul stuff in the back, pull my stupid neighbors house of its foundation if I wanted to, have a place to carry my dogs, and feel safe driving around my family in it. As a newly married man, I like that I feel safe in this truck. One of the reasons for buying the Ram was because I could get side curtain air bags. My truck's got em.

Bought the Ram because a stupid deer jumped in front of my jeep & totaled it... I was out growing the jeep anyway. I swapped the motor on the jeep a few months earlier and pulled the old motor apart to see what kind of shape it was in and found there was no ridge on any of the cylinders... (motor had 200k on it)... so I have been sold on the mopar motor ever since.
would be nice if they were engineered a little more effeciently though...

My first truck was an '85 Ram with a slant six.
Since than I've owned two Dakotas and my current '01 Ram.
I choose a truck because I like them better than the cars they make today.
Cars feel too small compared to my truck, and you get a better view of the road, not to mention the lady in the car next to you in a truck.
Besides, the Ram is virtualy indestructible, I know it will last a long time.

Why did I buy a truck?
Well background on that is my first vehicle was a 76 Bronco, the various VW's water and air through the early 90's. Then back to a 91 S-10, then a new 94 Ranger, Totaled the last two vehicles here. Then came my 91 Nissan Hardbody that was the most worked vehicle I have ever owned. Bought it for 4000 in late 94, then managed to put just over 25K in the thing only to have my friend wrap it around a pole while in basic training. Then came the 91 Camaro that I drove till I bought my Ram. I was really tired of climbing out of that thing. Fun car, plenty fast but a real pain to drive in Bay area traffic. So the desision came and I wanted another truck. I looked at all the brands and sizes. Chevy wanted to much for to little, including interior space. Ford felt like a wet noodle all the way around, ride and power. The Toyota was nice but to expensive and to cramped like the inside of a car. I drove several of the styles of the Ram just as I did with the others. Since I was single I decided on the STD cab. Then came the time to find a truck, mainly after the Camaro self destructed again. The local Lithia dealer really twisted my pickle, and I walked away. Ended up 25 miles away and they only had 2 standard cabs on the lot with 8's. One short, one long. Thats when I found my silver long bed and it had exactly what I wanted and lots of room to stow the camping gear and haul the boat. Biggest reason for the purchase of a truck was the need for a large vehicle to tow the toys and cart me around in comfort. That and the V8 that resides within...

I love muscle cars...especially Dodge and Plymouth...well my parents refused to let me spend my money (they matched the $8,000 I had saved up and refused too if I bought my 71 challenger) on one so I went with something that had a V8 and I could modify. The venerable 318 is a good solid engine so I got my new 2001 Ram 1500 318 Q/C for $18,000. I have always loved muscle cars and trucks so the truck was always my second choice...Oh yeah, and as my friends say I am the "coolest hick" they know and if ur a hick u gotta have a truck.

My reason is simple. Where I live it snows a lot during the winter months and the s10 I did have wasn't 4 wheel drive. So I had to get something that wasn't scared to go in the snow and bad weather. And my Dakota has a V6 so I gained some extra horsepower as well.

We had bought DH's Dakota just 8 months after I got my Suburban back in 2001. Told hubby that if Dodge ever came out with something large enough for a family of 5 and could tow our 28ft camper-the Suburban would be history. It took 5 years, but I took the plunge in March when my Mega Cab came. I get the best of both worlds, enough room for three kids-2 full grown teens and a 8 year old. Plus no more dirty carpet, or bikes in the camper when we vacation-they all fit nice in the back of the truck.

I bought my first truck a 03 Dodge 4X4 this yr because of the size, the 4X4, the ability to get into place's that a car cannot, and most of all the HEMI.. Well that is a very good question,
We have two jetski's and a ranger that we take to the lake house, which is about 3 hours away. I wanted comfort and the ability to haul the 16 foot trailor with the lawn mower and ranger on it, then behind that we pull the jetski's. I am a big person (6'6" 280) and have lots of stuff and a family. I have not pulled the toys with the cummins yet, toatled king ranch ford powerstroke, but when summer comes again I guess it will be a Dodge Caravan, lol. It is a long SOB to drive, and really hard to get into a convience store when you really gots to pee. :-)

I drive a truck cause i do lots of off-roading, farm so need a truck to go in the fields, down dirt roads, plus i am a huge sledder in winter, alot easier throwing a sled on the back of the truck then hauling a trailer around with a car, and last of all, i love big trucks, being bigger then everyone else on the road. Nothing is better then pulling up behind a little honda at a light and not being able to see the rear end of the car, must be scarry lookin in the mirror to see a big huge grill on their ass :D haha

Hauling, 4x4 ability, and towing. Those are my main reasons, and in that order as far as importance goes. A car just doesn't cut it for any of these options, and SUV's are limited in what they can haul (you wouldn't really want to ever put a ton of top soil in the back of an SUV for example).

[:-] That's INSANE!! Well I got a Ram cause it was a good trade, I had to unload a '97 A4 nicely modded, because I was tired of drivign a princess, and my buddy traded me his '00 Ram with 88 000 km (my A4 had 152 000 km). Have always had a truck since my first vehicle, an 89' Nissan. Totalled that and have had Dodges ever since, two Dakotas (89 and 94). I mainly used my truck for work, I install all types of floor covering, but after the last Dakota which was a single cab, my family has grown (a 2 year old and one on the way) so a QC was the way to go. Its just a safer feeling being in a solid truck. The last Dakota I had was in a pretty decent 3 car accident, and although it was eventually totalled, it was the only car to drive away from the accident. Gotta love solid steel bumpers. lol
edit:I forgot the most important reason, 4 wheeling in the snow, which here in Mass. is a give in every year.

I wanted to get in touch with my inner redneck.
For me that says it all, except I really am a redneck...I started driving my dads trucks on the ranch when I was 10 or so...Soon after I started pulling our stock trailer around the ranch and backing them up myself. I've been hooked on trucks all of my life I guess. My first truck was a 1988 Ford Ranger with a flat bed on it (ranch truck), then a 1984 Toyota (off roading truck), then my wife's 1992 Toyota (commuter truck), now my truck. The specs are in my signature, but it is a family/fun truck for hauling horses, hay, camping gear.
When I went to school the parents helped me buy a car for "gas milage" (between the toyotas)...well they may get good gas milage, but you can't off road them...

First vehicle was a 1990 GMC Sierra Reg Cab. I beat the hell out of that poor little thing. Next came a Wrangler, then a Mustang (BOO!), after that a Formula (which I still have and adore.), then a Dakota. Husband & I decided we wanted another vehicle so we sold the Dakota and I went to look at the Pontiac Solstice.
I'm 5'10 and sitting in that vehicle was like sitting in a bucket. Yuk.
So... I'm thinking about what to do. We sold our truck and now I really didn't know what to look at next. I start thinking. We are always camping, visiting renaissance festivals, heading to the beachhouse... How can we live without a truck? Since our little Dakota was such a good little soldier, we decided to take a look at the Dodge line. Holy cow... Dodge had definitely changed from 1995 to the present. As soon as my ass hit that driver's seat, I was hooked.

When I was around 9-10ish, I was first taught how to drive on back roads in an old 88 Ford f-150. As I got older, and got my permit, I was very uncomftorable driving my moms Grand Prix and even the Grand Cherokee we had. My step dad still has the 88 F-150 plus a 2001 F-150. When I saved up enough money, my first(so far) vehicle is my 1996 Ram 1500. I just like how I'm higher off the ground and I like being able to see everything. Plus, a truck suits my personality. I bought myHemi Rambecause I wanted a tough truck, a niceSUV and a fast car all in one. Now that I have all three, My wife is happy, my kids are comfortable and my need for speed is satisfied. Although the speed part can be expensive when it comes to all those speedingtickets. Anytime I want to kick it into four wheel drive and cruise a logging road, I can. Anytime I want to race a little four banger, I can. I don't think I'd rather have any other truck than mine. Thanks Dodge for making such awesome rigs.

I bought my truck after four years of driving a grand prix gtp. I've had a truck before and just missed the view. I feel so much more comfortable riding in a truck. I do miss the speed of my Grand Prix but it's great having four wheel drive. I don't have to call me brother in law to haul stuff either. I will never again own anything but a truck

I bought mine so I can haul the motorcycles to the dunes. If you're not pulling a trailer you can go the normal speed limit.....not the rediculous 65 (or what ever it is) if you pull a trailer on the freeway! Also, I need some way to get the jet skis to the lake!!!

I had originally owned a 89 Bronco fullsize with 32's on it and then got an F-150 stepside that I lifted with 35's but have always loved the way the dodges looked so when I just recently sold my camaro I finally got to get the truck Ive always wanted and thus far I love it!!! I just worry about all the threads you see about trannies going out........ But like they say its all about the maintenance, right?

I thought I would get this thread going again. I bought my truck because I am a truck guy. I like sportscars, but I prefer to be bigger than most of the vehicles on the road. I am not trying to compensate for anything, but why drive a car when you can drive a truck?

I bought a truck because I needed the towing capabilites, the 4x4, and enough room to haul stuff around without needing a trailer.
I do alot of hunting and fishing and it just wouldnt be practicle to load my coffin blind, dog, gun, shells, dead birds, and 3 dozen Full Bodies into a car. I can carry all this stuff in my trcuka nd with the quad cab and my home made trailer there is enough room for 5 guys, all our gear and we usually stuff our decoys into the trailer.

I've almost always owned a truck. My first truck was an '89 F-150 and literally drove it until the wheels fell off. My next truck was a '98 Silverado 3-Door. Drove that one until the wheels almost fell off. Now I'm in an '07 QC with the Hemi.
Love the commanding view of the road. Love being able to haul stuff (fishing/camping gear, top soil, lumber, 3 dead bodies wrapped in a carpet, etc). And I love the fact my wife refuses to drive a truck. She's got her minivan (Chrysler, of course), and that perfectly fine with me. :D

I live in North Idaho, so having a truck helps get around in the winter, and a truck is a necessity for hunting and fishing in the mountains. It also makes me feel good to be bigger than all the cars on the road.

I have had a car, and a van even but when I am not in a truck it just doesn't feel quite right. All of my trucks have been Dakotas and the only other truck I will drive is a Ram. I personally don't use mine to haul very much or anything like that but it is nice to have one when you need to do that type of thing.
