Hey guys,

My 2000 Durango R/T has a infinity sound system. a couple days ago, my driver side midrange/woofer went out. Does anyone have any aftermarket Infinity speaker replacement recommendations for a OEM Infinity system? I called the dodge parts house and they wanted $79 for a original Infinity 6 1/2 inch speaker replacement. I don't mind paying the $79 for the one speaker but I like to see what other alternative infinity speakers are out there that are just as good or even more durable. I do prefer an Infinity brand if possible to maintain a all around infinity system.

It is only stalk. If you don't put Infinity speakers back in, it won't change the sound. It will only sound better anyway.

I replaced my speakers in my 03 durango after I bought it new.
I replaced the factory speakers with Infinity (reference series 6002i )
They sound so much better then stock, and rock a lot louder, clearer.
Thats what I would recommend if your not looking to spend tons of
money.

Here is a earlier post about the same thing....

Will these speakers bolt on without any retrofiting and/or having to use mounting adapters. Also, will the OEM speaker connectors connect directly to the 6002i's without having to replace the connector with another head or something? Just trying to maintain factory as much as possible.

Did some digging on the net and finally found the infinity website! 6002's are history as they are old models I guess. Current model is the 6012i's. Not sure what the difference is other than possibly slightly higher power rating? Now they have a 6012SI version which is a low profile shallow speaker for the tight shallow locations.

DigiToxin, I assume the 6002 bolted in perfectly in the original OEM hole locations? But I assume you may have had to splice the speaker connector to connect to the new 6002's?

Here is the link to Infinity's website on teh 6012 series.

Love to have those Kappa's but I think using the factory amp, those Kappa's would be overkill.

Here are the possible Infinity replacement speakers for the 98-03 Durangos and possibly Dakota's.

Which Infinity Amp would be a ideal or perfect replacment for the OEM infinity amp that can be mounted in the same location of the OEM infinity amp?

Kensai , Yes, I had to get new connectors and I also drilled new holes
in the door with sheet metal screws. The 6002i speakers had a different
mount pattern.
Not sure I understand how the 6002i are not much different from stock?

The 6002i series has a angled tweeter in the middle of the main 61/2 in"
speaker. The stock speakers had no tweeter and not near the watt handling.

The stock speaker is a component type speaker. Only offering midrange and low bass. The tweeter is mounted separately and is toward the top of the door. Be interesting based on what you said about the sound being better. Almost like having 2 tweeters per door now. I wonder how much better the sound quality would be if I went with Infinity's Reference 3 way 6.5 inch speakers instead of the 2 way's?

Digitoxin,

I just bought the Reference 6012i's. Before I even open the box, the infinity support people got back with me and say that the 6012i will not fit the 1st generation durangos. However, their 6012si (shallow version) will fit. The 6002 series also have a standard 6002i and 6002si (shallow version). Which 6002 did you use? If you used the si version, then I need to return the 6012i that I bought from Fry's and see if they have the shallow version. Bad thing is the shallow version loses 10 watts rms power. 50 watts max for rms for si version versus 60 watts max for rms for the i version.

Thanks,

Kensai

Kensai,

I have the 6002i version. My Durango is a "03" and they fit just fine.
I have them in the front and back doors.
I do not have tweeters towards the top of the door though. Not sure
if tweeters are separate on other styles like SLT, R/T , or not.

As for the 3 way speakers. I didnt like the sound they put out, when
I tried them as much as the 6002i. That could be personal preference though.

I did some further research on the net and found a dakota site about someone trying to fit Kappa 62.5's I think. He came to the same problem as I did, he went out to ask some installers and 2 of 4 says no and 2 says yes. He came to find out the maximum speaker depth for Dakota's/Durango 1st generation is 2 3/16 inches. I pray this is true. I got the specs on the 6012i's and the depth on those speakers is 2 1/16th. The 6012si's shallow version is 1 15/16 depth.

This only leaves you with 2/16th or 1/8th of an inch play. Talk about very tight fitting!

Also another question Digi, have you ever used those darn, getting late and I cannot remember the name. It's dampening material. Fry's, bestbuy, etc, sells this stuff. Mainly to dampen noise and vibration. They have a set for door speakers and wondering if this dampening material helps lessen panel and door frame vibration and resonance. They have a pair sheet for $20 for the premo grade and $13 for standard grade.

hey Kensai,

Glad those new version of infinity's will work for ya.
I Don't recomment any dampining material. Because
I tried it a while after I installed my infinity 6002i 's and
it took away the crisp sound and had more of a muffled,
or covered sound. Believe me, that sound deadener material
will deaden sound. At least it did in this situation in the doors.

By the way, those doors on the "03" are easy th remove,
with a little care, you could install those speakers your
self.

Digi,

Was it you that mentioned you had a PDF file on how to change out the speakers on the door? I have taken apart many doors on many vehicles but this is my first for the Durango and I like to know what obstacles I may run into and do not want to tear up anything if I can avoid it.

Thanks for your recommendation and help Digi. I cannot wait to hear what these speakers sound like. I may have to get another pair for the back to match everything up. At first, I wanted to get the Kappas but with their 2 ohm rating, I do not want to shorten the life of the OEM amp. I may cheat and get a resistor added to the Kappas to bring up the ohms to 4 ohms. I learned from the past that if your amp is not designed for the lower resistance speakers, it will short out the amp.
