Hahaha... Hhmmmm old school vs new school... the debate starts...
I love my 5.9L... lots of things to mod and make faster. The 5.9 has been around longer, therefore has more upgrades available, but the 4.7 is getting it's own aftermarket parts upgrades following finally, and that's great!!
In my opinion... 5.9L all the way baby!!

depends on what you mean by better, fuel economy and refinement the 4.7 is a better engine, but for power the 5.9 is the better engine, personaly i'd take the 5.9 over the 4.7 anyday, hell with fuel economy, give me more power

I have 5.9 Ram and a 4.7 Dakota so I have experience with both.
The 5.9 is a simple design (less moving parts). It makes good torque and horsepower when modded. You will have to spend big bucks to really up the power because of it's limiting factor, the PCM. You will get fuel management issues when you start upgrading to the 408 stroker annd supercharge it. It always gets crappy mileage.
The 4.7 is a modern SOHC engine that runs very efficiently and gets good mileage. There are plenty of upgrades out their but some are costly. I haven't seen any modded 4.7 engines that will make as much HP and torque as a 5.9 yet.
Both engines have their good and bad sides. Both have plenty of potential. I like both engines, but I prefer the 4.7 in my Dakota over the 5.9 in my Ram.
In my Home state of CA you can't do many mods because of our strict smog inspections. I can't run the M1 manifold, or a 408 stroker etc, nor can I run without a CAT. I follow the law and wouldn't advocate removing your emissions equipment anyway.
The new 05 Dakota have the 4.7 HO option which puts down like 255 to 265 HP. A 5.9 never had that kind of power stock.
the 5.9 is a little lower in horse power than the HO 4.7, not by a lot though and it has more torque, the 4.7 HO isn't avliable in any current dakota's, it will be in the 2005 though, compaired to the 4.7 that's in any of the current dakota's the 5.9 is a lot more powerfull, the 4.7 puts out 230hp and 295 lb-ft, vs 250hp and 345 lb-ft on the 5.9 in the dakota R/T.

Several months back, a Mopar Mag. raced a RC dakota 4.7L against an RC R/T Dakota with all the bells and whistles on the option list including a anti-spin rear. The 4.7L had an open rear and stock tires. Both trucks were stock. The 4.7L won 3 of 3. As we all know, there is more available for 5.9 now, but the 4.7L will get some parts too.
