Default Failure to Go Into Park

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid R/T. It will not go into park. If I work the shift back and forth it sometimes will go into park. I went to the dealer to see if there was a recall on it. There wasn't one my VIN. They didn't know what could be causing this problem. I have made an appointment but I want to be better informed. To top it off my emergency break is not working. Could this be connected? Has anyone had this problem?

is your shifter also hard to move as if cable was binding. also with key off and foot on brake see if you can shift into a gear if so your interlock rod is bad and you need a new shifter assembly. if it feels like cable is binding or shifter is hard to move then replace upper cable it is about 75.00 not to bad to do dealership will charge about 125.00 i no because i have done plenty

Default RE: Failure to Go Into Park

I had a similar problem on two cars. The first one was a very simple fix like hemipower1984 stated. It could be your shifter assembly or simply the shifter linkage cable. These can easily go as they see a lot of moving around. The second one was a very painful fix and I hated finding it out. My transmission had actually started to slip. It wouldnt go into park sometimes and I would have to literally rock the car back and forth to get it to "slip" into park. Hopefully this is not the case. Your honest to god's best bet is to take it to a "REAL" mechanic and have it looked at....somewhere that might give you a free estimate....or if you are comfortable with your dealership...i.e. know they arent trying to screw you....then take it there.....believe me.....the expenditure now to prevent something is better then having it happen knowing you could have prevented it.
