Default Horsepower Gain

how much horsepower will i gain if i disconnect the air conditioning system. the evaporator is f*cked, so as far as I'm concerned my air conditioning system is dead to me. from what i understand, if i disconnect the A/C system, i will gain horsepower. for my intrepid, all i have to do is remove a belt, and the crank shaft is no longer connected to the A/C compressor.

When the A/C is not turned on there is minimum hp loss. The main benefit to removing the A/C system is the weight loss, not the gain in horsepower.

The compressor does not weigh too much probably 10 pounds. If you can remove it an find a shorter belt to drive your pullies, you might see a small gain.

it isnt a matter of it being on, or so much the weight.

you remove the compressor because even when not engaged, the drive belt is still turning the pulley on the compressor, and when it is turning ANYTHING, it creates a drag on the engine, since it is also powered by the crank pulley. this is the same reason that the mirada doesnt have power steering. the fewer things driven by the crank, the less parasitic loss is created, thus more power. i have seen a kid in a civic cut the drivebelt off on a track car and run with no powersteering, no ac, no alt, and no water pump before...

For a quarter mile run you really don't need a cooling system, look at most purpose built drag vehicles they have no cooling system at all.

thats what i thought. on my 2.7 there are 2 belts, one doing the crankshaft, a/c, and a tensioner. the other doing everything else including the crank shaft. all i have to do is remove that first belt. i didn't think the a/c system weighted that much anyways

You can always add stickers! Good horsepower gains (dyno tested) and lightweight! Flames I hear are the best.

*cough*
