Trans. slow to change when col

I bought my 96'Dodge 2500 - Cummins - 4 WD - new. Never have done alot of pulling - no boat - no horse trailors - occasional tractors. 2 mons ago the trans. ( 4 spd. auto ) started to hesitate changing gears in the morning and after the truck sat all day at work. It would take higher RPMs to change and then shift harder than normal. After on the roadawhile ( the truck warms up ) it shifted fine. I changed the fuild in the pan ( 4 qts. ) and the filter - it shifted like a new truck again. I changed that fuild two wks. ago.Yesterdaythe trans.started doing the same thing again - slow to shift when cold or when it has been sitting over night. It's got 101K on it and never had a problem with. Any ideas what it could be...? I really like the truck but this worries me. Thanks for any help with this.

My truck recently had a similar problem. The Linkage on the Trans could be getting dirty with debris, it could be somthing as easy as the mechanic cleaning it... or you may need to have it taken apart, taking the solenoid out, and pulling the linkage out to clean within. OR it could be the Spring attached to the Linkage is wearing out... which is what my problem was. Got the spring replaced and BAM! New truck... LOL!

Taking it apart is a b***er job, but you can try to figure the problem out yourself, before taking it in. Have someone to help you, they get in and put the truck in Neutral, and holding the Brake. You crawl under, and look at the Linkage. Have your helper press the Gas and watch the Spring and Linkage move. When he lets off, if the Spring doesn't retract steady, or is slow, it's likely the Spring, if the Linkage is noticably sticky, then it could be that...

How's that for help... ? LOL!!Thanks for the email!! :):)

dodgegirl -i sent you an e-mail

trans went last night - had towed - it has to be PCM, or something - only 77K - no smell or debris in trans fluid - went to 4,800 RPM, engine died, reset battery/computer, and restarted engine, but had no trans (fwd or rev) - no noises either - just nothing!!!!

Hi cumminstd76, first in my opinion is Amanda much closer to solve the problem than me, but additional to her suggestion is the fact, that oil gets much more thick,of course,if the temperature is going to freezing point outside, even the waterlike gear oil. This little more can couse slower shifting action.I own a ´98 canadian model and these rigs are equipped right from the factory with a water heater in the radiant and in the transmissioncase. If you´re living in an cold areaits better toinstall this useful thing (connecting it with a timer on the battery). You get instantly by turning the keys warm air of the heating, themotor is on temperature and your problems with the trannyoilcould be solved, too.
