I just got a charger R/T a couple of weeks ago and I have been noticing the fuel economy isn't even close to whats on the sticker. I get around 14mpg driving normally. Is this what is to be expected, or do I have a problem with the displacement on demand function?

Sounds low, how many miles do you have on it. I have just over 2K on mine and I avg 20+ MPG when driving normal with just a little lead foot. I think I have heard of some Magnums having a similar problem.

I read in the manual if the battery is ever disconnected the dealer needs to reset it for the MDS to work. I'm thinking this function is not enabled. So far I have about 500 miles on it.

EPA is always a little off. For a Hemi V8 though, I think that sounds low. Doesn't the Hemi Ram get better fuel ecomomy, while weighing more and is less aerodynamic?

I now have 3000 miles on my new charger and I average 18.5 over a tank and I stomp on it every single chance I get.
On the freeway at 60 mph my mileage computer will show up to 24 mpg, and during a good stomp it will drop to 10 but over all it has been very good.
If your Charger has the Electronics Convenience Group it should be easy to tell if the Multi Displacement is working. Just reset while keeping an even speed on the freeway.
If your not getting at least 20 over a five minute period I would suspect a malfunction of the MDS. I do know that if 5-20 oil is not used it can cause the MDS problems but that should not be an issue unless the car has had an oil change already. The Hemi's that are put in trucks do not have MDS so their milage is lower.

If you buy a Hemi, are you more concerned about fuel economy or performance? Seems like two mutually exclusive characteristics. Just my two cents....

Speaking of fuel mileage, Im looking into getting the Charger, but Im torn between getting the 3.5L V6, b/c I do want decent mpg and putting in another filter or etc, might help 2-3 mpg more. I would like to be in the 20-21 mpg range for city. I see it gets 18-19 already. But, I keep hearing everyone talk about the Hemi and the mileage they're getting. What kind of mileage does the Hemi get and how does the Hemi get almost the same mpg as the V6?

What engine options with the car and aftermarket options do I have to maximize the mpg? I love the look, room and everything else about the car, but I have a Ram 1500 now and it sucks on gas. 11-12 mpg. I really like the Charger, but would like to know how to get 21-22 mpg out of it first, w/out having grandma pass me everywhere, but not lead foot either.

Thanks everyone!

OK, guys. Here's what I have/did. I put an MP cold air kit on my 06 R/T. I also put a Magnaflow exhaust system, and the JET Stage 2 performance chip in it. I took the chip out this past weekend, and drove the car to work on Monday - half highway, half in town traffic - about 25 miles total. Without the chip I barely managed 20 mpg. Last night, I put the chip back in. This morning, in addition to better performance, I drove the same route to work. When I pulled into my parking space, I had averaged a little over 25 mpg. It saw a high of almost (27.8) 28 on the highway at 75 mph. I have a bit over 3300 miles on the car and live in New Mexico at about a mile above sea level. Guess I'll leave that JET chip in - at least until I get the new tuner for it.

74scamp did you notice a difference when you past the 3K mile mark. I had an 05 magnum and was not getting great gas mileage, but once it past the 3k mile mark there was a noticable difference in gas mileage and performance. Where at do you live in NM I live in ABQ. Let me know how the programer works for you at this altitude. I believe the altitude is killing these cars. I had put a MOPAR CAI and magna flows on my Magnum only to wsee a little change. Last summer took the car to San Diego for a week, a TOTALLY different car.
