Default 2001 dakota - ticking?

2001 Dodge Dakata, quad cab, 4x4, v-6, 5 speed.
don't know to much about the dakota's yet. bought it in Jan. 05. Everything running fine w/ no problems. Now could hear a ticking sound from the motor somewhere. Read the other thread about the "Pinging" but i don't thing i have a "ping". More of a "tick, tick, tick" sound. could hear it when idle. don't seem to hear it when driving, although the noise might be drowned out w/ the surrounding road noise. changed the oil at the local Walmart - i know but it's cheap. i suspect they might of used a 10-30 weight instead of 5-30. don't have a manual for the truck. not sure what oil or gas is recommended. been using premium for the last month to see if it helped, nope. any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. thanks. till next time.

I have a slight ticking on my 2000 4.7 V-8 engine that I 'suspect' might be the timing chain?

I had to replace the one on my 94 Dakota.

I'll be sending the Dakota into the dealership in a few weeks for an evaluation of the noise because I dont trust my own evaluation.

I have a 94 with a 3.9L V6, and when at idle, it ticks all the time. This is just a case of the lifters being gummed up. I used to work with someone who was (is) a distributor for King Oil Company and they marketed a solvent which you run in your engine for an hour or so and then drain it and put fresh oil and a new filter on. After this, not only did it stop ticking, but I regained some power and the truck runs great! But like I said, it is more than likely the case of the gummed up lifters which is very common, depending on how many miles are on your truck and how you took care of it maintenance wise. Hope this helps.

All right guys...lets not forget about the injectors. They tick....I have it in my truck as well as another vehicle I just bought. It can drive you crazy but they do make noise. Engines today sound nothing like the engines in my day. More moisy then ever before in My opinion. I'm not saying you don't have a valve or lifter problem but...it might be worth checking into.

I took mine into the dealership today, and as suspected,my timing chain, gear, and tension adjusters are bad..It only going to cost me 925 bucks for parts and labor[>:]..This is my second Dodge truck and BOTH have had to have these parts replaced.

The fuel milage sucks on this 4.7 and im very disappointed that I have to fork out 925 bucks for the chain/gears..

Im very glad I talked my brother John into buying a new Z-71 instead of the new Dodge Durango with a hemi.
