From the good book........

IGNITION COIL
DESCRIPTION

The coil pack consists of 2 coils molded together.
The coil pack is mounted on the valve cover (Fig. 11).
OPERATION
WARNING: THE DIRECT IGNITION SYSTEM GENERATES
APPROXIMATELY 40,000 VOLTS. PERSONAL
INJURY COULD RESULT FROM CONTACT WITH
THIS SYSTEM.

High tension leads route to each cylinder from the
coil. The coil fires two spark plugs every power
stroke. One plug is the cylinder under compression,
the other cylinder fires on the exhaust stroke. Coil
number one fires cylinders 1 and 4. Coil number two
fires cylinders 2 and 3. The PCM determines which
of the coils to charge and fire at the correct time.
The Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay provides battery
voltage to the ignition coil. The PCM provides a
ground contact (circuit) for energizing the coil. When
the PCM breaks the contact, the energy in the coil
primary transfers to the secondary causing the
spark. The PCM will de-energize the ASD relay if it
does not receive the crankshaft position sensor and
camshaft position sensor inputs. Refer to Auto Shutdown
(ASD) Relay—PCM Output, in this section for
relay operation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Well now let us see here...

Fires one coil or the other every power stoke the other plug attached to that coil fires on the exhaust stroke...
Welcome to Waste Spark, as it is not really used it is wasted during the exhaust stroke.

While the coil does have the 3 leads to operate the coil that is just the primary side which is electrically isolated from the secondary side which is where the magic happens.

How it fires is, the coil relative motion of the magnetic field collapsing when the primary side charging circuit is broken. The coil terminals 1 and 4 are at opposite ends of one of the secondary coils. When the magnetic field collapses the secondary voltage and polarity is set as it is always charged in the same polarity. This means that one terminal is positive and one is negative. The spark then fires from terminal 1 and a seeks terminal 4. Thus one fires normally center electrode to ground strap. The other then fires from ground strap to center electrode back through the spark plug lead to the terminal.

Coils towers 1 and 2 are + and 3 and 4 are -.
1 fires to 4
2 fires to 3

The Coils electrically should measure out at
Primary side Steel Towers .45 - .65 Ohms
Primary side Brass Towers .35 - .65 Ohms
Secondary side Steel Towers 11,500 to 13,500 Ohms
Secondary side Brass Towers 10,900 to 14,700 Ohms

This is why no single platinum plugs for which no less than Bosch and Autolite have admitted and stated are incompatible with DIS waste spark systems.

Coil On plug or other variations which you have one coil per cylinder then you have all coil firing on the plugs the same way and while are a form of Distributorless Ignition System, they are not included in the above caveat because they fire just like old stuff.

One last thing/thought to add.....

We actually read electricity backwards.l. The negative side actually flows to the positive side. This is because it is actually the electrons that flow. Electrons are negative which means they are attracted to the Positive side which means negative to positive flow.......

The time has come to change my spark plugs. I have been using BOSH Platinum for last few years. Tried to buy NGK - they don't sell Neon size in Canadian Tire. Ended up buying Champion - the car runs well.

Actually never had one problem with them and I just added alot of performance mods and now she runs even better . So Im keepin my bosches they are just as good as the rest to me . I put them in at 35,000 miles and now have 80,000 miles and not have one code come up on me just the gas cap not being put on right twice. Runs very nice better than the day I got her brand new.

I can understand your sentiment but after all the trouble people have had with them and after reading on a couple trustworthy sites that Bosch and Autolite both admitted they were not DIS Waste Spark compatible I don't see the point in trying to prove them wrong. I just got the Double Platinum plugs and went on my way. I work at a Ford store and they hate them too on waste sparks systems and is why they came with double platinum plugs.

If your happy, have a good time. Just know you may run into that problem at some point.

Just changed plugs more on a whim than anything, no problems cropped up yet but.......

My double platinum Autolite plugs (which are supposed to be DIS compatible per Autolite) shed two ground strap platinum tips. Not good. They were starting to have localized gap erosion and were starting to not look so good.

Champions it is for now and maybe back to my favorite plugs NGK later. No more Double Platinum for me.

Copper core or Iridium only from now on.

is there any difference if i got an 03 neon SE. its an SOHC 2.0L I4; a little different then all the DOHC and SRT-4 and even the r/t models. i havent had the car long but plan to do as much body mod as i can and performance upgrades would be nice. what setup is best for my 03 SE as for plugs/wires in your opinion.

For a good plug for the 2.0 SOHC, go for the Champion or NGK coppers. As far as plug wires, any decent plug wire will do just fine as long as it runs about 8000 ohms of resistance and doesn't leak voltage... MSD's are a bit pricey compared to cheaper brands that do just as well, but that's just my opinion. Also don't get fooled by the MSD coilpack... it's virtually no different than the factory OEM coilpack.

I tried the NGK Irridium IX plugs. They have been really good and with 15K miles on them I didnt notice any performance loss. NGK makes good stuff.
