I know I have seen this subject a while back but cant find it. I just bought an 05 1500 w/ the hemi and 20" wheels. My gas mileage is 10.5 per gal. at best, half city, half highway. Is it worse during the break in period? I only have 400 miles on the thing and I have been extremely light footed 99% of the time. Dont want to break anything. Does the superchips programmer actually make the truck more efficient when you tweak the computer a bit? Exhaust and airkit didnt do a thing for my 02 with a 4.7. Didnt make a programmer at the time for it.

I just bought one myself so I'm kind of curious about what to expect. The computer states that I am averaging around 14.2 miles per gallon in city driving. We shall see!

my dads new hemi club cab is running at 12 mpg average. iam sure that its all due to the break in period. once you get past that, it should bump up a tad. but who buys a hemi for gas mileage right?

Well, if I'm gonna have poor gas mileage with either motor anyway, I'd rather have it with the Hemi.

our trucks computer on the overhead console shows anywhere from 12.5 to 17.2..don't know how accurate that is- only 250 on the odometer.

Well I ve heard most dont trust their trip computers but mine has been accurate give or take half a point. It was sittin low when I first got it and now I m sittin at 10500Kms and running Mobil 1 and its a steady 16.5mpg (for me its around 15Ltr/100kms basically around 650 - 700kms a tank)

Now granted I dont drive it hard (about 5 over the speed limit) and there have only been a few occasions where I ve felt like layin a few strips of rubber which its done with ease but I guess I m kind of a light foot on it. I m not really in a hurry to empty out a tank of fuel with it costin me about 100 bucks to fill it up.

My 04 gets 14-16 mpg wich seems to be respectable. This may be off the subject a bit, but I also have a ticking noise and my dealer says it is normal injector pulse noise. The 04 Hemi also has a computer glitch that causes it die. They tell me that 5 star is aware of the issue and is coming out with a flash in 4-6 weeks. Well, it has been 2 months and no word.

I got an 04 hemi with about 23.5k miles on it. I get on average around 14.5 mpg with my daily commute being about 18 miles city and 30 highway. I just through on a K&N intake and my console is reading that I'm getting 30 miles more for this tank of gas, but we'll see what the math says when i fill up today. I found out that Superchips makes a programmer that has an 87 Octane setting to help with gas mileage. I think i'm gonna look into that.

alot of injectors do click and are definitely audible.  if you touch the injector when the trucks running you can feel it click also.

the computer flash stuff sounds like a load of BS to me...But it may be true i dunno..

You have some issue.

Mine has not changed much since new.  Always been in the 14 range and I am about 80-85% city driving.  It recently dived to 13.6-.7, but that is a result of my new wheels/tires.

Like I said you have an issue or are in the gas to much.  When driving around town what RPMs is your truck shifting at when you drive what you consider normal?  Light footed is very subjective, RPMs are not :)

How many miles?  Do you know for sure all maintenance was done on schedule?  I just got done with my plugs, was not as bad as I thought they would be.  Also cleaned the TB, it was VERY dirty.

"light footed 99% of the time" is your problem. Your rings have not seated well because of the low power settings your using. I just bought a 08 SLT 5.7 mds, with about 20 miles on the od. After a good warm up around town, I took it to 100mph. At a hi power setting the rings will seat better with the cylinders, higher compression, less blow-by, higher mpg. At 300 miles on the od, I'm avg 15mpg combined, about 19mpg on the hi-way. That's with frequent WOT....a lot of WOT. This truck is getting way better mpg than my 2000 1500 sport 5.2. When I get about 1000 miles on it, the mpg,s  should even get better. Warm it up well then drive it like you stole it. You might have to re-hone your cylinder's and start the break-in again.

Mike
