Default how do i check codes?

Sorry if I sound stupid, I do not know much about cars. I here people on here talk about how to check the cars computer codes to see if something is wrong. How exactly is this done, and how do you know what codes mean what? My car won't start and I am trying to figure out why, it is not the battery and I have already replaced the coolent temp sensor. The engine turns over just fine, but never fires up. Thanks for any help.

Default RE: how do i check codes?

you can check the 'p-codes' if you've got a newer car, they'll be displayed in the odometer, this way:
turn the key to run, but not far enough to crank it, then off, then back on again... anywhere from 3-5. it's 3 on the sedans
look in the odometer, it'll say p0137 or whatever the code is, then you'll get a bunch of -------- and it'll cycle to done when they've all ben displayed

remember the code, type it in a search on here and you'll see what it is.

if your car is older, you'll do something similar, except you'll be counting engine light blinking.

Do note, however, this only works if your check engine light is on. otherwise badstrat is right.
