View Full Version : What is causing this?
dakrt_00 02-03-2004, 11:58 AM Does anyone have a problem with your truck not being able to shift out of first. Ihave a 2000 R/T and when I stomp on it from a stand still the rpm's shoot up and wont shift to second when it needs to. It will just start cutting the truck off because of being in the red line and finally shift when you let off the gas. This really sucks when you try to race someone.

Does anyone know what might cause this and maybe how to fix it?

DodgeIT 02-03-2004, 05:05 PM Sounds like a speed sensor.
Vader 02-03-2004, 05:39 PM Check vacuum lines also. Make sure all are properly connected.
vHiEpMeIr 02-09-2004, 05:49 AM You might need your transmission fluid changed, when was the last time you had that done? My Mustang won't go into 3rd gear so we are going to have the transmission fluid changed and they said hopefully that's the problem. Either that or there might be some gunk in the linkage, does it have trouble dropping into gears like Drive or Reverse? Not while driving, like when you are sitting and put it in reverse does it get stuck?
dakrt_00 02-09-2004, 01:11 PM No, the problem only occurs when you start out. It only does it when you stomp on the gas and take off. It goes completely to the rpm red lines and starts cutting the truck off because of being in the red line. Then when you let off the gas just a little it's fine, which sucks because you don't want to have to slow down. Thats the only problem there is. I hadn't made it to the dealership yet but hopefully I can soon.
RcBandit28 02-09-2004, 03:20 PM Did it throw a check engine light or anything?
dakrt_00 02-11-2004, 12:57 PM IT DOESN'T CAUSE ANY LIGHTS TO COME ON AND IT HAS DONE IT MORE THAN ONCE TOO.
kccapn 04-04-2004, 11:58 PM I had this same problem. I talked to a local transmission shop and they recommended resettting the pcm. There are a couple of places on the internet that wil tell you to remove the negative battery cable and turn the key to the start position and hold it for 15 seconds. This did not work for mine. After talking with the guys at Superchips about it, they told me to remove both of the battery cables and tape them together for abuot 3 minutes,... (none of this should ever touch either post on the battery. That could cause a major pcm problem) I qusetioned their theory on this, and the guy at Superchips said that it is the equivalent of rebooting your home computer. After some skepticism on my part, I finally tried it. It worked, and has never done it again.
dustyloins 04-05-2004, 12:13 AM The more computers they have, the stranger the solutions....
dakrt_00 04-05-2004, 12:47 PM I will have to try this, thanks for the suggestions.
TravR/T 04-09-2004, 11:19 PM Maybe I'm missing something, but it sounds like what my truck was doing when My Cat went bad. If I pressed the gas slowly, it would accelerate fine, but when it was hammered on, the truck would red-line and barely move.
dakrt_00 04-10-2004, 04:40 PM THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT MINE WILL DO. SO MAYBE I NEED TO GET MY CAT SEEN ABOUT. DID THAT FIX YOUR PROBLEM WHEN YOU DID REPLACED IT?
TravR/T 04-13-2004, 04:56 PM Yeah, as soon as I had the cat replaced it ran smooth as ever. You can do a simple check on the cat by knocking on it with a rubber mallot. If you hear a rattle in there, the element has broken loose.
dakrt_00 04-14-2004, 12:45 PM ALRIGHT I AM GOING TO TRY THAT WHEN I GET HOME FROM WORK TODAY. I AM REALLY HOPING THAT WILL FIX IT. DID YOU REPLACE IT WITH ANY HI-FLOW CAT OR JUST STOCK?
TravR/T 04-14-2004, 06:33 PM I replaced mine with a stock converter. There is a law here in CA that they have to replace the cat if it goes bad in the first 80k miles.
dakrt_00 04-19-2004, 12:47 PM WELL I DID TRY WHAT YOU SAID AND I DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING. BUT I WAS ALSO IN A HURRY ONE MORNING BEFORE I HAD TO GO TO COLLEGE WHEN I DID IT, AND I HADN'T HAD A CHANCE TO CHECK IT AGAIN SINCE THEN. IF I EVER HAVE MORE TIME I AM GOING TO CRAWL UNDER THE TRUCK AND HAVE A LOOK AT IT AGAIN. IF THIS ISN'T THE PROBLEM THEN I DON'T KNOW WHAT COULD BE.
