Default air filter and gas gauge

i have had a problem with my gauges for a while and just kinda lived with it. finally i searched these forums and found an amazing post telling me i needed to re-solder my gauge cluster. my speedometer works now which is great but my gas gauge, though it looked like it was trying to work, did not give an accurate reading. then today when i changed my oil i had them change my air filter (it was FILTHY) and now my gauge is reading a lot better. i was wondering if it is possible if my air filter was SO DIRTY that it actually affected my gauge? is that possible? thanks!
