A brand spankin new 2008 Honda civic Si 6 Spd. 197hp 2.0 i-Vtec. Im paying 401 dollars a month for it for 4.5 years. The car is awsome. I really mis the truck though. But im glad i hve the room now though. Bought the car with 4 miles on it. Since last night, i put over 200 miles on it and it has just undr a half a tank. It now has around 200 miles on it. Its black with a black interior. I'll post pics of it as soon as i take them tomorrow. I mis the dak, but happy with my purchase.

Not everyone makes the kind of money that they can afford to keep blowing it on gas prices..... and I know how you feel. I had an 01 Clubcab Motorsports Edition Dakota with the 4.7L V8. Loaded with a bed liner, fiberglass bed cover, and footboards.....and I still wish I had it.

However getting 15mpg at best on the highway was ridiculous and eventually got tired of filling up every week. This was back when Katrina hit, too. Now I drive a Grand Prix GTP and pay for premium gas, but I get 330 miles to a tank and usually only have to fill up about twice a month.... which is great. I'm paying the $60 regardless if its regular or premium gas anyhow...

Bashing him for this is stupid, as the rest of you guys who get 10mpg and drive it daily are going to need to get off your asses and get with the bigger picture here too.... I aint sayin you need to get rid of your trucks, but driving these daily instead of something with better fuel mileage is stupid....not to mention you waste more fuel then the rest of us...

umm idk how you drive but i get 16-17 AROUND TOWN with my truck and about 20 on the highway so there was something wrong iwth your truck, and i am not worried about giving my truck up bc im going to college and cannot have a car on campus anyway(not hat id need it in hoboken anyway) but when i get out ill probably get a car, something like the charger or similar but for now im just paying it and not complaining aobut it bc i know that its my own fault im paying so much bc of what i drive

Not every truck gets the same kinda mileage man, and I sometimes got as high as about 17 mpg, but half my driving is city and half is highway.....so no matter what, I'm screwed.

My point was never to bash anyone for what they drive, but for people who are getting less then 15-16mpg in their vehicle, its time to get a little smarter about their driving or the type of vehicle they drive. I saw some moron driving an H2 over the weekend cruising all night....I was like are you brain dead?

Personally I would have bought a bike and kept the truck, but like stated before not everybody is at the same place in life. Enjoy the savings DAK3.9, save a bunch of money and then buy another Dakota too

The other side of the coin is looking at it from a purely financial standpoint. It doesn't pay-off until after you've owned the Civic for 23 years. Read below.

I have no payment on my truck, and spend about $0.25/mile to drive it (at 16 MPG, and $4/gallon). At 5000 miles per year, that's $1250/year to drive it. Plug in your own numbers to get your own cost/year.

Now figureI went out and bought a new Civic, at $400/month. Figure I could average 30 MPG on my commute...now it costs me $0.13/mile to drive it. At 5000 miles per year, that's $650, about half the truck. But you have to add the car payment; at $400/month, that's $5450 total. Again, plug in your own numbers to get your own data.

So, on my truck, that's $1250/year, every year. On the Civic, that's $5450/year until after the 4th year, then it drops to $650/year. Even then, if you plot that out, you'll find that the break-even point is after the 23rd year. For this deal to work out, I'd have to own the Honda for 23 years. Not likely.

Variables ignored are the cost of insurance and the rate of fuel cost rise. You can't accurately predict the cost of fuel. Some people say fuel will be $300/barrel in five years. Some say it'll be back down to about $100. Who knows. All you can do is assume a relatively flat rate of fuel costs. In addition, even if fuel costs $7/gallon in five years, the rate of inflation is not known either, so that might really be $4 in today's money.

Anyway, food for thought. In general, it never does make financial sense to sell a paid-off car to buy a newer one, only for fuel economy. You can buy a lot of gas, and I mean a LOT of gas, for the cost of that car payment.

By the way, at only 5000 miles per year, my pay-off is WAY down the road. But supposing you drive 15k miles per year, just as another data point. In that case, thebreak-even pointoccurs between the 10th and 11th year.

And just for what it's worth, I don't think people need to "be smarter" about what they drive, no matter what MPG they get. It's all about how they prioritize their money. You and I may not agree with it, but I don't think we need to be judging themfor what they're driving. When I used to live in western VA, you'd see brand new trucks parked in front of mobile homes. I'd personally put money into a house before buying a new car, but I'm not them. I've got friends who spend almost all of their money on skiiing. Skiing's fun, but I choose to spend my money on other things, and I don't tell them they've got to be smarter about their spending habits. People without pets probably can't fathom something spending $1000 on surgery for a pet when that pet might die in a few months anyway. Again, we've just got different priorities on where our money goes.

The same applies to vehicle choices. Personally, I'd rather drive my Dakota, without a payment, and buy gas for it then spend half as much for gas, but have a $400/month car payment. Others would rather drive H2s and get 10 MPG. If that's what they like, that's what they like. My other car sits in the garage almost all week, rarely gets driven, and I'm paying $250/month for it. But that's what I like, and I wouldn't expect someone to tell me how to manage my money.
