Default Front axel tube modification???

I just read a post on doing the front axel seals and dhvaughanbrought up a good point. Is it possible, with some welding and fabricating of course, to seal the axel shaft at the end so that mud and dirt and water and everything else doesn't get in and foul up the seals? I thought I saw Stacey on Trucks do it before but that was quite a few years ago. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts on that?

Outboard Axle Shaft to Axle Housing Seals are found on many 1994-2002 Dodge 4x4 trucks. QU40362-2 is used on 1994-2002 1500 1/2 ton and 1994-1999 3/4 ton trucks under 8800 lb. GVW . QK4629 is used some 2000-02 4x4 2500 and 3500 models. Seal presses on inner shaft next to the yoke. It's function is to keep dust and debris from entering the axle housing tubes. Made in U.S.A. Includes two seals. Dan the Gear Man Tech Tip: To maximize seal life and prevent squeaks, apply a thin, uniform coat of a quality grease to the seal lip. QU40362-2 Outboard Axle Seal Set includes 2 seals for 94-99 1500 and 1994-1999 2500 under 8800 lb. GVW $29.98

All I know is it says some come with and some come without, so maybe some machining is required on the ones without. I have not used them , but I would imagine the second the ujoints go bad it will ruin those outboard seals. But maybe they are made to withstand some abuse.

8t5gt : when u mention lucas additive are you referring to the fluid 80/90 or a additive to prevent the leaks? i have a leak also i had a ps pump leak and used lucas and that stopped it but i havent found anything for the differential. I figured i would just go with lucas regardless but im unaware of a stop diff leak. Thanks for help

If your axle is leaking there is no additive that will stop it. It is only going to get worse if you don't fix the problem.

Really an axel seal is not all that hard to do. The hardest part is getting the hub assembly taken apart. And then of course you have got to make yourself a little puller for the CAD located seal
