Default problem with ECU/Dials??

I have an '03 Neon which i had to jump-start recently due to the front fog light switch breaking and leaving the lights on while the car was parked up.
No problem getting the car started but now the speedo needle and rev counter needle have done nearly a complete 360 degree rotation around the dial and are stuck underneath the plastic pegs they would normally rest on when the ignition is off.
As i fired the ignition when jump starting the car the needles did their usual diagnostic 'trip' around the dial. I've seen this before when the battery has been low or just reconnected but instead of returning to their resting point they both rotated right round.
It might be worth mentioning at this point that I am from the UK and have a RHD model sold under the chrysler badge but i doubt this makes any difference.
I have tried disconnecting the battery to see if it would reset but no luck. Only left the terminal off for a couple of minutes, might I need to wait longer to be sure of no residual power remaining?
No error codes appear to be displayed on the odometer when the key is turned 3 times, just 'done'.
Would appreciate it if anyone could suggest a way of reseting the dials, or confirming that it means i've fried something and if so what it might be.
Alternitavely would it be necessary to take the dash apart and physically move the dials back to their normal resting point?
Also it would be good to be able to do this without the need for visiting the main dealer, unfortunately being in the UK the nearest is an hours drive away and prices for parts are not cheap over here.
For instance they want 130 GB pounds for the new light stalk to fix the original problem, never mind the fitting, and that includes a 4-6 week wait for the part to arrive.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Ian.
