RE: Idle issues
I often come here for issues with my Durango. Could not find an answer to my similar issue, but I figured it out myself and thought maybe it could help you.
My '99 Durango would die at idle. I'd have to rev it up to keep the engine running. Consistently died at idle. I thought maybe the computer needed rebooting so I removed the positive cable from the battery and re-attached it. That worked for a while. Yesterday it happened again. I did the battery disconnect again... worked fine and I took my grand-daughter to Walmart, only to have the Durango not start when we were going to leave. We were stranded in the parking lot! It acted as if the battery wasn't even connected. I made a call and got a ride home to pick up my tools. Used my volt/ohm meter to check the battery. Fully charged. Checkedfor continuity between the battery posts and the cable clamps. All zeros... good... the clamps are well connected. Checked for continuity between the battery posts and the cable as it went into the aftermarket clamps (I bought a new battery 2 summers ago and the original clamps wouldn't fit the posts). The negative cable had poor continuity in it's connection to the clamp! To look at it you would think it was fine... nice and tight. But on disassembling the clamp I saw the cable's wires looked tarnished. I cut off the ends, restripped the cable to show bright, clean wires and re-assembled the clamp. Durango started right up, now runs fine.
I believe one should check all the minor things before buying high-cost parts you may not even need. Usually, it's the simplest things that go wrong with machines and electronics.
