Hi folks,
I am new  so be patient. my problem is: I just bought this dodge ram d150 and i'm already having problems. the truck will be going down the road fine when it will just shut off.I try to start it and it will not start. I'll try a few times then all of a sudden it will start I took this truck to the mechanic and they said that the distributor was at fault. so after 600.00 bucks I get the truck back and it does the same thing. I check for spark at the plug no spark,I check for spark at the coil no spark. ten minutes later the truck will start and run fine. what can I check next? asd, pcm? where does the power to the coil come from? is it routed through the powertrain control module? or does it come directly from the battery through another relay?   Help plz. I like this truck but am not going to sink a fortune in it

Check your codes... it should tell ya where to look

Turn key "on"-"off"-"on"-"off"-"on"  then count the flashes of the check engine light... "on" is not start

First I would go back to the mechanic and complain, for that kind of money you should be having no problems.
Check and clean all related connections, maybe some dielectric grease to.

Thanks guys for the reply.
I went back to the mechanic its in the shop again.originally he
said that there was a problem with the hall effect pickup. but my
thing is if there is no spark to the distributor then the hall effect
pickup would show a code right?.I think instead tracking the problem he went for the first trouble code and replaced the
distributor. these guys are usually good at the electronics.

im fairly certain that a bad hall effect sensor should throw a code 11 (no crank/ignition reference signal detected during engine cranking)

by the way some shop manuals give a different explanation for that code.

anyhow just do the old onoffonoffonoff flash check.

and like moparborn says, 600 bucks is real money.

My truck did this to where it would start only in the afternoon around 3:00, try in the morning and it would just crank. Ended up being the computer was fried. Also since the computer was screwed, it wouldn't show any codes, the conventional way and with a scanner.

I changed the coil spark is good. now I noticed when I was looking at the tbi that one injector was s[rayng alot more than the other so I took out and sprayed it with wd40.and I noticed that the fuel pressure regulator was hooked up to a port with no vacumn at idle. so I hooked it up to one that did,has not stalled since?so far, can somebody tell me where it is hooked up on theirs?

No spark and no gas would point to the camshaft position sensor in the distributor, or a bad connection to that sensor. While I'm more familiar with fords, the general thing with fuel injection from any maker, is that the computer won't fire the sparkplugs or the fuel injectors until a signal is detected from the camshaft or crankshaft position sensor

check the asd relay.it controls power to the fuel pump relay and grounds the ignition coil as well when they go bad it usually acts like this

I've checked just about everything asd new, wot relays are good
jumped out the ignition switch, new distributor, with new hall effect sensor. its back at the shop now. hopefully they won't say that they can't reproduce the problem it stalled and would'nt start on the way there. after about 10 or so tries it started.I think your right about the computer. its probably screwed. I'll keep you guys updated.
