I think i seen in the manual that you do it every 3,000 or 6,000. I drive highway to work about 5 miles or so and i dont drive all that much. maybe driving around town and work is under 1,000 miles a month. When does everybody get theirs done?

Depends on what kind of oil you have. If you are running regular motor oil it would be in your best interest to change the oil/filter every 3000 if you care about your truck. If you are running sythetic u can change it every 6,000 to 12,000 depending on the kind. Royal Purple is rated at 6,000 i think and AMSoil is "said" to be rated at 12,000. But i reccommend putting RP in it, and so do alot of other people on this site.

I run Mobil 1 in mine and change it every 5000. It's a easier to remember that way.

I normally get just regular Castrol GTX oil.

Remmber that it's not just the miles you put on the truck but the time the oil sits in the engine too.
I think normal oil will break down if you just let it sit for about 3 1/2 months witout even starting the truck

I changethe oil in my Ramevery 3K. My new Speed3 specifies 7,500 (on a turbo!!). That will be ignored. Will probably change it at 1k, then at 5K and 10K. Then I'll switch to synthetic in the Mazda and still change it every 5K.

I would just use regular oil and change every 3k. If the oil breaks down, your motor is done. Especially with today's engines.

redneckdodge the amsoil I run is rated for 25k miles.

Mine isn't a 3rd gen but I run Royal Purple and change it every 3k miles sometimes 4. A good rule of thumb is 3,000 miles or 3 months. I usually would say 6 months though.

hometheatreman, that's just the old folks way, my granddaddy changed it evry 3,000 miles, my daddy changed it every 3,000 miles so I'm gonna change it every 3,000 miles.
As for 3 months, people dont drive 1,000 miles a month, most people drive more so 3 month would be more than 3,000 miles.
One last thing, why would toyota UK say change oil every 12,000 miles and toyota north america says every 3k? Because big oil want money, and they can't get it that way in Europe as they have fees for disposing oil as they dont condone wasteful behavior.

Our manual calls for 7k between oil changes based on your driving style. I normally run full Synthetic oil for about 5-6k before I change it. I think a lot has to do with your driving style and also how the oil looks when you change it. I think now a days with most synthetic blend oils, you are fine following the manufacturer's recomendation. My wife's Volvo calls for Oil changes at 7500 miles. Most European Vehicles call for the same or more. I think bottom line is dont let your oil sludge on your vehicle, use the correct viscocity , keep it topped off and dont exceed manufacturer's recomendation.

I've always done Mobil 1 with a Mobil 1 or Wix filter every 3000 miles. Overkill, I know, but for 14 years I lived in Georgia and was off road at least every weekend plus on just as many red clay dusty dirt roads as paved ones.
Now that I am in Florida (at least for a while) I don't off-road often at all not to mention almost all the roads are paved. I recently switched to Royal Purple and plan to change it every 6k. Makes it easier to remember when to rotate the tires as well, since I've always done that every 6k. Now I won't have to remember if I did it with the last oil change or not...;)

i have to agree with ramitone. i have good friends who work for oil manufacturers and they say that most, that's most, oil is good for 6 to 7000 miles without needing to be changed. they underrate their product for two reasons. one, it makes them more money. two, for the small chance that there product fails before therecommended "oil change" date. now, i don't want to even take a chance of a product failing so i'll change at about every 5,000 miles.

thanks mustang.
Makes sense, if you tell them 3k instead of 6k that brings em back twice as often, twice the money, more opps to tell them something else is wrong with the veh.
I can tell you with certainty that when I change at 10k it'll look better than anyone dead lizzards at 3k miles. It costs me about 60 bucks per oil change as I use the 25,000 mile amsoil, they also make a 35k mile one, and I use and amsoil filter, now sure I could stretch it to 15k or 25k but I figure 10k is fine. Besides, I'd rathery oil come out clean every 10k than dirty every 3k.
Come on hammer, come over to the darkside.

I'm going to be running amsoil and amsoil filter or mobil 1 or royal purple. either way all are rated for longer than 3000. I will still change my oil every 3k miles. I don't care if that's excessive and yadda yadda old folks way. My truck is my baby and pretty much the center of my world at this point since all I do is work, school, and drive my truck lol. so I'm going to do it every 3k miles. what does being a bit anal do to hurt the truck?.... nothing.
hey ramit which amsoil is it that's rated 25k. the one i was lookin at is 12k miles.

I get regular oil changes at 25,000 miles. I use a dual filtration system and SSO/0W30 Amsoil fulll synthetic. There are a total of 3 oil changes so far on the 5.7 and the odometer stands now at 64,500 miles on the 05 Hemi. I have to wait another 18,000 to change it again. Real world use and facts are what I need, not hype. Amsoil has been in all our vehicles for years, with no problems.

This is a cut and paste from a previous post of mine, so it may bore someone who read it before :)
I remember reading the Consumer Reports (http://www.moneybluebook.com/articles/consumerreports.oilchange.php) article years ago where they tested different brands of oil on NYC taxis, and different intervals of oil changes. Here are some interesting facts from it.
"To determine whether frequent oil changes really help, we changed the oil in three cabs every 3,000 miles, using Pennzoil 10W-30. After 60,000 miles, we compared those engines with the engines from our base tests of the same oil, changed every 6,000 miles. We saw no meaningful differences.
The bottom line. Modern motor oils needn't be changed as often as oils did years ago. More frequent oil changes won't hurt your car, but you could be spending money unnecessarily and adding to the nation's energy and oil-disposal problems.
Even in the severe driving conditions that a New York City taxi endures, we noted no benefit from changing the oil every 3,000 miles rather than every 6,000. If your driving falls into the "normal" service category, changing the oil every 7,500 miles (or at the automaker's suggested intervals) should certainly provide adequate protection. (We recommend changing the oil filter with each oil change.)
We don't recommend leaving any oil, synthetic or regular, in an engine for 12,000 miles, because accumulating contaminants - solids, acids, fuel, and water - could eventually harm the engine. What's more, stretching the oil-change interval may void the warranty on most new cars."
As for me... the book for the 2008 Ram with the HEMI says to change the oil every 6,000 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first. With the Lifetime Powertrain Warranty I have, there is no way I'm gonna go over that. I figure my old 5,000 oil change interval will work for me just fine again.
HEMI owners note; make sure you use the right oil (5W-20 for the ones with MDS). Don't let anyone at an oil-change place tell you that another weight is ok, insist on theproper weightand watch them pour it in! Some places have been known to use a cheaper weightbulk-oil and charge for something else (this is the reason BMW provides free oil changes).
Note: Since I wrote that, I did my first oil change in the Ram. The guys at the Goodyear service center did everything they could to talk me into using a different weight oil since they were going to have to send out for the 5W-20. I almost walked out when, after pointing out that my lifetime powertrain warranty would be void if I used the wrong oil, I was told by one guy "How are they gonna know what you put in it?"

I have used nothing but Mobil 1 since 1990 and I change oil every 7,500-10,000 miles. I've dropped oil pans at 100K+ miles that looked as clean as they did brand-new. Changing oil at 3K or 5K is a waste of time and money.
