Well, after getting my P0420 code and checking out both O2 sensors for debris, I think I am going to go the route of replacing the cat on this beast - 152k miles.

I took a look under the car over the weekend and I see where the cat bolts to the manifold via two seemingly spring-loaded bolts. The other end of it seems to slide into the pipe that contains the rest of the (original) exhaust components and there is a clamp around it. I am envisioning this being a horror show in that I won't be able to free this end up. I only have experience in flange-type exhaust component replacements where there is a gasket and two bolts involved.

Has anyone done this job? I am going to go with one of the cheaper cats I can find. I just need this to pass CT emissions so I can register it again.

One more thing. Once the cat is replaced, should I not reset the code (CEL is on) and let it resolve itself or should I clear the code and let it update? The reason I ask is that I cleared the code once already just to see if it would ome back and it took almost a month and a half for the catalyst monitor to update itself (through lots of drive cycles). If I don't have to wait this long, all the better because my registration is due at the end of next month. Of course, since the condition still existed, that may have extended the amount of "retries" it was giving it to try to resolve itself and made it take that much longer than if the system was OK. Just my thought.

Can anyone recommend a cat (cheap)? Thanks for all comments!
