Status: offline 		Here's a shot of the baseplate on the '86 Q-jet I just received.  It looks like someone tried prying it off with a screwdriver.

Status: offline 		 Mighta got something chunked on it.  A little careful flat filing should clean it up. While it aint pretty,given the area it's in it shouldn't be a problem. Does it have an meter control solenoid in it or other computer garbage?

Looks like choke and idle stop are the only electronics.

What circuit is that anyways?  It looks different from other q-jet pics I've seen.  I dont see how I can file it flat and still get a good seal on a gasket.  The gouges are pretty deep.

I'll give the junkyard a call tomorrow and see if they have another baseplate to send.

Status: offline 		 Mike if memory serves  the U shaped one is the ported vacuum circuit,see if it ties to a nipple on the front of the carb. Should be a couple holes just above the blades. The j shaped is straight vac. ports?  Been a while since I've done a Q-jet. You think the gouges are too deep? Those Q-jet gskts are pretty thick an' squishy.
 On a side note there's a brass stop screw that adjusts the primary metering pin piston. The piston/metering pin assy. has a pin that rests against it. Vacuum pulls the piston pin against the stop screw,opposing a spring.  It sets the depth of the metering pins in the jets. It's best not to jack with it. I have raised the pins a little to help a lean surge @ cruise,but mostly I don't touch it.

Status: offline 		I blew some air in but cant tell where it's going.  Might have to get the thing apart first.  The deepest gouge is about .025".

I'll try not to unscrew anything I dont need to.

I'm trying to decide whether to do just that or have a shop resurface it about .025" for ~$20 ... dunno how close to the surface some of those inner passages are though.  The rest of the carb looks great so I'm gonna make do somehow.  I've got the body soaking in some cleaner now and my rebuild kit ready to go.  Man this has to be the simplest carb I've ever worked on (fewest # of parts anyway).

Status: offline 		it would piss me off to have recieved the carb beat up like that but i guess buying it used and unseen i would just get over it and move on with a rebuild.as long as it doesnt suck air from those gashes i wouldnt worry about them.if you do a resurface it may throw off the flange adjustments.....just my opinion im not a carb tech even though i play one at home

Status: offline 		  I always liked the Q-jets OK. Kinda touchy on choke settings,but otherwise pretty dependable. Not too prone to heat soak induced flooding etc. like the
2bbl Autolite Fords were. Easy to change the secondary metering pins and air door adjustment.
