I have the 46RE, It just burnt up need some advice on best routes to take. I dont want it to happen again, but not looking to spend alot of cash on something stronger than I'll ever need. Is there another tranny that can swap in my truck? I can break these things like nothing but when it comes to fixing them I couldnt tell you anything.

stock equipment is weak, both tranny and tc.
there are several well recommended transmissions including
http://www.thefastman.com/transmissionComplete.asp
http://www.dreviltransmissions.com/home.html
http://www.apsprecision.com/Transmission.html
jasper..
i'm sure there are others.
they all provide an upgraded transmission like what should come stock.

its my opinion that getting another stock tranny from the junkyard is just that - more junk.

its also my opinion that a local shop can be a gamble.   if you get a solid 3 year, 36k warranty, and you know someone that's had a good experience  then maybe..   but as far as just picking a place out of the phonebook, i think i'd rather go with one of the experts above.

if you replace tranny by all means replace tc.

The trannys are crap in stock form, but once rebuilt with aftermarket parts, they are actually very stout.  There is nothing wrong with the stock converters, just take it in for a rebuild at a local shop (NOT a chain shop such as AAMCO or Cotman's.)

Thanks for the links, I really appreciate the help. But is there a difference in a transmission built for racing and one thats good for mudding? Another thing is that Im averaging around 10 mpg on the highway, my truck never shifts into overdrive guess 65 isnt fast enough. Would those shops be able to adjust my gears so its more daily driveable?

10mpg.  ouch.  i see in your sig 38" w/488.   that sounds like a pretty good combo, but those are damn big tires and probably have a huge amount of resistance.  i don't know if you'll ever get better mpg with that setup or not.  you might try front 02 sensor or tuneup.

no overdrive.  sounds like a tranny problem. (could be associated with it being burned up)  with stock gears and 285/75 mine shifts into od at 40mph, which is way too soon.

yes and no on tranny.  they re-build them with better materials and tolerances so they don't fall apart, regardless of the application.  this withstands the stresses of towing, heat, horsepower (and racing).  tell the tranny guy what you got/want, and they build them accordingly - standard heavy duty or super duper horsepower/racing..   drag racing torque converter is different from daily driver (higher stall speed for high rpm takeoff)

there's not really any adjustment in gears, except to pay a lot of money to change the ring and pinion gears.  but with tires that big, you wouldn't like the sluggish feel of 4.10 or 4.56.   what rpm's are you turning at 60-65 mph ?

Thanks man this is all helpful, at about 60 I wanna say 2,000 but really the fastest Iv gone in its probablly 70 just because it catches wind or jumps around on the road so I have no clue when it would shift down. It could be the tranny just being fried, but right before it went out I was on the highway and my OD off light came on. I didnt think anything of it because it wouldnt go in anyways but probablly 10 miles down the road we were doing 45 and the truck dropped by itself into what felt like 1st, the front slammed down and the back raised way up scared the shit out of us. When we stopped the truck started running fine so we let it cool off, couldnt smell anything so drove it back home. About two miles away I took a turn and drive started just reving up like it was in neutral and I had to put it in 1st and drive the rest of the way back. Smelled horrible and the fluid looks pretty bad the next day, swapped the tranny filter and it was completly clogged with metal and something else all in the pan. Was hoping it just couldnt get enough pressure to shift the gears but I think its cooked this time. You think my Jet Chip could cause this? It says it adjust and firms shift points, so I removed it but that tranny just got flushed. In two weeks of having the gears and tires on it got clogged, I changed the filter drove it fine for almost a week then all that happened.. Thats why Im worried if my tranny started going that fast if I need some really strong aftermarket parts for it?

well i was gonna rebuild it with a727 parts and keep it for a spare.   a 46re/46rh  are actually an a518 torqueflight    and a 518 is actually just a 727 with an overdive unit.  now not all, but most of the internal hard parts are interchangable.

I run the "Pure Evil" 46re from Dr Evil and am very happy with it. it even came with a brand new custom built torque converter. Billy "aka Dr. Evil" has to be the smartest tranny man I've ever talked to.

APS IMO is the best way to go. Wayne is great to deal with. Can't say enough good about him.

Dr. Evil also seems to be a pretty good company.
