high engine rev at start up

dojman -> high engine rev at start up (5/11/2008 2:44:37 PM)

Hi I have a 2000 dakota 3.9l v-6.  When I start my engine cold it usually revs to almost 2000 rpm before dropping to normal.  Any ideas how to fix this?  thx

its the choke and it is that way to naturally warm up the engine...its normal. let it be for a minute and then hit the gas real quick while in neutral and the rpm's should come down...if not, then spray some carb and choke cleaner all over the outside of the throttle body concentrating on the choke area and throttle linkage.

theres no chokes on these trucks, they are fuel injected, clean your IAC (intake air control) solenoid for a first step, its on the throttle body

Im sure mine revs to 2k than drops almost right away though.. Just right when you start it though.

yea i think mine jumps when you first turn the key too, but then it drops to 900-1000(when cold) until it warms up some then drops to like 500+/- but i have the 4.7, im pretty sure my dads truck jumps up there and falls back down when you turn the key too tho (he has the 3

On the 4.7, rev'ing to 2000 rpm is not right.  I agree, clean the IAC or replace it along with the TPS.

i have the 4.7 and it only goes to 1800 and quickly calms down to 500-700 reguardless of the weather

yea i payed attention to what mine spikes to when i turn it on and its more like 1200-1300 then comes back down relatively quickly(but its in the 60s-70s here so its kind of warm)

Hi if I replace the IAC can I get one from an autowrecker or do I need a new one?

shrpshtr325 -> RE: high engine rev at start up (5/21/2008 12:03:13 PM)

i wuold suggest buying a new one their not expensive, only like $40 or so

artking -> RE: high engine rev at start up (5/21/2008 5:52:48 PM)

I expect that's normal.
