I have a 2000 4.7 ltr v8 dak.  I have a problem with my engine's rpm.

As i am cruising along my rpm surges up about 300 rpm for about 4 seconds then returns to normal. It happens about once a minute. However, sometimes it doesn't do this for several minutes...but for the most part it does this regularly.

This happens at about any rpm that I may be cruising at.

Any ideas??

Thnaks in advance.

Vacuum Leak some where... Sounds like a little one, and when it hits a spot it hits it. That or you are having a torque converter malfunction

I did a search using the word rpm.

Bunch of stuff came up but on the ram truck forum.

These guys had the exact same symptoms my truck is displaying and they are saying most of the time its the TPS. If not that, then the torqe converter. But again that 95% of the time it's the TPS sensor. Could this be the same fix for a dak?

By the way my truck is 4.7 ltr v8 with 32k miles and I don't think the trani fluid has ever been changed.

ANybody with TPS problems if so what were your symptoms....

Anybody else?

Thanks for all the replies in advance.

My 2000 dakota 4.7 did this and also surged at idle and rpm raced when started.  Changed the tps an another sensor on the throttle body (don't remember what it was) and everything was good.

Could very well be that. I would change it. See what happens. 50 bucks isn't that much... Rather than having someone diagnose it for that. If not, I would do a tranny service after that.

ANyway I'll deftinately post back with results.

Thanks again.

Have been busy and haven't had the time to purchase the TPS. Noticed today that it didn't surge much if at all today. As soon as I get the chance to make the purchase I will post with results.

Where is the sensor located??

Thanks in advance
