I need help! i have a 2001 Dodge Durango with a 4.7 V8. Once the engine is started there is a ticking noise.During accleration the ticking gets louder. When you reach 40mph it starts to vibrate very roughly until you reach 50mph. The check engine light came on at the begining of this process. When hooked up to a code reader it said "cylinder # 7 misfire". After reading the Haynes repair manual.I changed all spark plugs, then the #7 coil, and the fuel injector. Once all that was done the code read the same thing. The ticking noise is a metal on metal noise. Please help.

have you been able to tell from under the hood, if it is comming from one of the heads. if so, it could maybe be in the valves, valve guides, springs, rocker arms.  and since you say it still gives a p0307 code. you should listen under the hood for the noise, listen twards the firewall on the drivers side.  let me know what you find out.

Sounds like a classic main bearing or wrist bearing.

Unfortunately I think you are looking into a re-build.

The noise does come from the the drivers side. how hard is it to replace the valves and things you mentioned? is this an expensive fix? when we hooked it to three different code readers, they all said cylinder#7 misfire. I changed plugs,#7 coil, and fuel injector and still get same code P0307! This is my first durango so i am very lost in this matter. your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Either way they are very expensive. You might want to do a rebuild or take it to a shop for a better opinion. It's hard to say when we are not there.

I think the next step is to pull that driver side valve cover. I have a feeling you will see evidence of mechanical damage once you are in there. If you find nothing there, I would run a compression test on the 4 cylinders on that bank, and see what kind of numbers you get.

You might get lucky and not have to pull the head, but most of the time in cases like this the head had to come off and be repaired or replaced.

I do not believe that a bearing is your problem as the engine would not necessarily miss due to a bad bearing, but just make noise.

I would not run the motor any more than you have to until you get a grip on this issue.
