yeah I think Joes numbers are high on his computer too. I thinkj he should do it by hand after getting the speedo calculated. The overhead consoles are usually off a fair amount.

You seriously can only get up to 80mph? Something is wrong with your truck it should be able to go way way faster than that.

The overhead computer may be off a fair amount, but it is an apples to apples comparison for where you are getting the best fuel economy. 4.10 gears in the rear of mine gives me the best economy at right around 61mph for highway cruising. The computer bobs right around 20 mpg on flat road. At about 47mpg, I get 22-23 mpg on the computer. If I hover around in the 50s or go up to 65-70 mph, then my mpg's drop to around 16-17. I don't doubt that these numbers are inflated, but by driving around these speeds I've been keeping my need to fill up at further intervals than I used to. It's all about what RPMs the engine pulls best in. Best advice I can give is keep your foot out of it when you accelerate, and keep the truck in the spot where it feels like it's floating and barely working at all and you're getting the best MPG's you can get on these bricks. I don't doubt also that not filling up to full (especially on my 35 gallon tank) would help by reducing the truck's weight and increasing MPG's.

it all depends on the truck guys, gearing, tire size, milage on the motor. A number of things. I think you are all right

Uh, on the interstate on my way home from work, it is very easy to get to 80, and I usually (depending on traffic) let it kick into OD at around 60. It is more of a dog in OD? Of course. But it still could easily go over 80 with it. I agree with hometheaterman, something is wrong if you can't.

Sorry, but I call BS on that. Throw in a bunch of hills and/or a headwind, and your fuel economy goes down. Couple that with a dirty air filter, and you lose more. 55mph is a myth created during the Gas Embargo of the 1970's. I've heard people calling the local radio station proclaiming the same thing. If 55 saves this much, why not slow to 45? BS, BS, and more BS. I USED to drive 70+ that is where the 279 came from!! All my numbers are hard MPG calculations. My truck does NOT have a computer as it is a 1995. Want to call me a liar, fine. Lets see if you are man enough to fill up, run 55-60 for a tank, and see if you get better gas mileage. Geez man you can see from your tach the engine is turning less RPM!! Most of my run is Highway and I am doing my best to baby it. I have more than 2.5 years of fuel logs that show my improvement from 15, when I first started to slow it down. I don't kin to being called a liar by some punk who does not know what I have done and where I have been with this truck by the way. I have owned it since it had 6 miles on it. I have worked very hard to get the 18.17 and two years ago I got 18.4 jackass. Try 55 or shut your damn mouth.

I think its possible , hell i hit the high 17s once .. But you gotta have control , lite throttle , even hitting a red light you learn to back off so the truck keeps rolling when it turns green and keep it smooth... can this be done all the time maybe , but i only hit that once when the truck was stock with just the exhaust on it...

+1 for bigramaniac. Just for grins and giggles today, dropped down to 55 from 75 on the way to work. 16 mpg versus an average of about 12! Albiet on the straightaway in the dead of morning with no wind. But, still increased the mpg by a fair amount and I lost what thirty seconds overall. If you travel 300 miles at 55 mph it would take your about 5.5 hours. At 75mph, 4. With 12 mpg at 75 you could do it at about 1 1/4 tanks of fuel At 16 mpg at 55 less than one tank. Its up to you, but for those of us who would like more mpg and still keep our trucks, we'll slow it down a pinch and loose the hour and half.

You have to remember the lowest rpm doesnt mean the best mpg. Like people have said before its where the truck is "floating". The engine is producing the correct amount of power to push the truck along. At a lower rpm trying to push say 55 right when overdrive kicks in the engine is still gona be trying to keep up more. In the end it all depends on the truck. On a side note. I too cant hit 80 easily. However im running 33's on stock gears and live in the mountians. Im lucky to have 50' between hills.. On the back side of them thats a different story
